Feature and Fit

We publish specification data carefully and correct it when it is wrong. It is still reference information, not a substitute for the documentation that came with your vehicle.

The short version

Before you tow, load, buy, fit a part or spend money on the basis of a number you read here, confirm it against the documentation for your specific vehicle: the label on the driver’s door jamb, the window sticker, the build sheet, or the owner’s manual.

Our figures describe configurations. Yours is a particular vehicle, with its own options, equipment and history. Those are not always the same thing.

1. General information only

Everything published on featureandfit.com is provided for general information. We compile vehicle specification, dimension, capacity and fitment data for the United States market from manufacturer documentation and public federal records, and we describe exactly how in How we source spec data.

That work is careful, and it is still not the same thing as the manufacturer’s documentation for your vehicle. Where anything on this site conflicts with the owner’s manual, the door jamb label, the window sticker or the build sheet for a specific vehicle, those documents are correct and we are not.

2. Accuracy and currency

We verify every figure against a source document before publishing it and remove anything we cannot confirm. Even so, specification data goes out of date and goes wrong for reasons outside our control:

Mid-year revisions Manufacturers change ratings, packages and standard equipment partway through a model year, sometimes without announcement
Regional variation Figures differ between markets. We publish United States specifications and they may not apply anywhere else
Package dependency A single option can change payload, towing, dimensions or fuel economy. Not every combination is documented publicly
Source revisions Manufacturer documents are themselves occasionally corrected after release
Vehicle history Modifications, accessories, repairs and wear on a used vehicle can change what it is actually capable of

We make no warranty that any figure on this site is complete, current or accurate, and we cannot guarantee it. We do commit to correcting errors promptly when they are found — see section 11.

3. Towing, payload and load safety

This section matters more than the rest of the page. Getting a towing or payload figure wrong is not an inconvenience. It is a braking distance, a trailer sway, a failed hitch or an axle beyond its rating, with other people on the road.

Never tow or load on the basis of a published figure alone

Maximum tow ratings published by manufacturers are established under a standardised test procedure, SAE J2807, which assumes a vehicle in a specific configuration carrying a driver and required equipment and nothing else. Your truck is not in that configuration.

Every passenger, every tool, every accessory, every gallon of fuel and the tongue weight of the trailer itself all draw against your available payload. A truck advertised at a high tow rating routinely runs out of payload long before it runs out of tow rating.

The figures that actually govern what your vehicle may carry and pull are on the vehicle itself, not on any website:

  • GVWR — the maximum the loaded vehicle may weigh, including everything and everyone in it
  • GCWR — the maximum the vehicle and trailer may weigh together
  • GAWR — the maximum load on each axle, front and rear separately
  • Payload — stated on the tire and loading information label on the driver’s door jamb, specific to your vehicle as built
  • Tongue or pin weight — the downward load the trailer places on the hitch, which counts against payload
  • Hitch and receiver ratings — a separate limit that can be lower than the vehicle’s

These limits are not interchangeable and you must stay within all of them at once. Meeting your tow rating while exceeding your rear GAWR is still overloaded.

Nothing on this site should be treated as a towing recommendation, a load calculation or an assurance that any vehicle can pull or carry any particular load. We do not know your vehicle, your trailer, your hitch, your cargo or your conditions. Consult your owner’s manual, your door jamb label and a qualified professional, and weigh your loaded rig at a public scale if there is any doubt.

For the underlying safety data, NHTSA publishes towing safety guidance, ratings and recall records.

4. How to verify a figure before you rely on it

This takes a few minutes and it is always worth doing. In order of authority:

  • Driver’s door jamb label — the tire and loading information label gives the payload figure for your exact vehicle as it left the factory. This overrides every published number.
  • Owner’s manual — towing, loading and capacity sections written for your model year and configuration.
  • Window sticker or build sheet — lists the packages and equipment actually fitted, which is what determines which published figure applies to you.
  • VIN with a dealer — a dealer can pull the build record for your specific VIN and confirm equipment and ratings. Free, and decisive.
  • Manufacturer towing guide — published annually and the authority on which configuration achieves which rating.
  • A public scale — for anything marginal, weigh the loaded vehicle and trailer. Ratings are theory; the scale is fact.

5. Fitment and compatibility

Where we publish whether a part, accessory, tire size, bed insert, cover or load fits a given configuration, that is a statement about the configuration as documented, not a guarantee about your vehicle. Fitment is affected by trim, production date, prior modifications, aftermarket parts already installed, and manufacturing tolerance.

Confirm fitment with the part manufacturer or a dealer using your VIN before buying. We are not responsible for a part that does not fit, for costs of return or refitting, or for damage caused by installing something incorrectly.

6. Not professional advice

Nothing on this site is professional advice of any kind, and no relationship of adviser and client is created by reading it.

Not mechanical advice We do not diagnose faults or recommend repairs. Consult a qualified technician
Not safety certification We do not certify any vehicle, load or configuration as safe or roadworthy
Not financial advice We do not advise on purchase, finance, leasing, resale value or insurance
Not legal advice Licensing, registration, weight and towing law vary by state and are your responsibility to check

Ownership problems, diagnostics and repair costs are outside this site’s scope entirely. That work belongs to our sister publication, The Throttle Times.

7. No manufacturer affiliation

Feature and Fit is independent. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or authorised by Ford Motor Company or any other manufacturer, dealer or parts supplier. Manufacturer, model and trim names and logos belong to their owners and are used only to identify the vehicles we write about. Our full position is in section 4 of our Terms of use.

8. Pricing and availability

Where a price, MSRP or availability appears on this site it was accurate at the time of writing and is almost certainly not accurate now. Prices change constantly, vary by region and dealer, and exclude taxes, fees and destination charges. Treat any price here as historical context, never as a quote.

9. External links

We link to manufacturer media centres, federal databases and other publications because they are useful primary sources. We do not control them and are not responsible for their content, accuracy or availability. A link is not an endorsement. Once you leave this site, the other site’s terms and privacy practices apply.

10. Advertising and affiliate links

This site carries display advertising and some affiliate links. We do not select the individual ads shown to you and we do not endorse what they promote. Affiliate commissions do not influence which vehicles we cover or what we publish about them, and no advertiser has any say over our specification data. See our Affiliate disclosure and Privacy policy.

11. Errors and corrections

We would rather be told than left wrong. If a figure on this site does not match the source document, write to contact@featureandfit.com with the article URL, the figure, the configuration it relates to and what you believe the correct value is.

We check every report against the primary document, correct the article, and note what changed and when. Our process is set out in our Editorial policy. Reader corrections are treated as a priority, not a complaint.

12. Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, KCS Global Group and the people working for it accept no liability for any loss, damage, injury, cost or expense arising from your use of this site or your reliance on anything published on it. This includes loss arising from a purchase decision, a towing or loading decision, a fitment decision, a modification, or any other action taken on the basis of a specification published here.

The full limitation, including its monetary cap, is in section 11 of our Terms of use. Where liability cannot lawfully be excluded, nothing here affects rights you have that cannot be waived.
