Silverado 1500 Battery Size for Your Engine and Build Date

Table of Contents
Silverado 1500 battery size starts with engine and build date
Retailer lookups often return several battery groups for one Silverado 1500. This page sorts them by engine, model year and stop/start content, because no single group fits every truck. We did not test fit on any truck.
Find your situation:
- Matching a battery to a truck you own: use the table in Section 3, then confirm on your label.
- First AGM, or unsure of the type: read Sections 2 and 4.
- Cross-shopping years, or a 2019 LD or 2022 LTD: go to Section 5.
Battery group follows the engine and build, so start from the configuration list in our Silverado 1500 specs by configuration guide.
π Check your own vehicle first: Specifications vary by build date, package and market, and two trucks with the same badge can be built differently. Before you buy anything based on this page, confirm against the label on top of your current battery, the Vehicle Care β Battery section of your owner’s manual, or a dealer VIN build sheet. If your vehicle disagrees with this page, your vehicle is right.
Group 48, 94R and 49: what actually differs
A battery group is a standard case size set by Battery Council International (BCI), covering length, width, height and terminal layout. Groups 48, 94R and 49 share a width and height, and differ in length.
| BCI group | Also labelled | Length | Width | Height | Applies To |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 48 | H6 / L3 | 278 mm (11.00 in) | 175 mm (6.88 in) | 190 mm (7.50 in) | Standard case size, not vehicle-specific |
| 94R | H7 / L4 | 315 mm (12.44 in) | 175 mm (6.88 in) | 190 mm (7.50 in) | Standard case size, not vehicle-specific |
| 49 | H8 / L5 | 353 mm (13.94 in) | 175 mm (6.88 in) | 190 mm (7.50 in) | Standard case size, not vehicle-specific |
Note: Published BCI group-size dimensions as listed by two secondary battery-reference sites that agree with each other; we measured nothing. Primary BCI page and terminal-layout details.
Same width and height, different length

Not every Silverado takes all three groups. A 49 is 38 mm longer than a 94R, and a 48 is 37 mm shorter.
π« Fits But Shouldn’t: A close group can install without seating, because length changes tray fit, hold-down and cable reach. Measure the old battery and the tray.
H6, H7, H8 and what the labels mean
H6, H7 and H8 are listed equivalents of groups 48, 94R and 49. Check a group against your truck with the Battery Group Size Finder.
Silverado 1500 battery group by engine and model year

The group depends on engine, model year and stop/start content. GM’s record for model years 2019 and later is not yet in hand, so those cells are marked rather than guessed.
Note: Engine codes and year ranges are from our Silverado 1500 engines by year page; model year 2027 adds the 2.7L L4B, 5.7L L76 and 6.6L L78, with no battery data found. No retailer fitment tool is used. Confirm each cell in GM’s owner’s manual battery section .
2.7L Turbomax, 4.3L, 5.3L and 6.2L
Find your engine code first, because one model year offers several engines. Until the table is filled, the group printed on your current battery’s label is the check.
3.0L Duramax: one battery or two?
Battery count for this engine is not yet sourced. Owner-forum answers are not a source; your model year’s owner’s manual settles it.
Stop/Start (RPO KL9) trucks
GM bulletin MC-10225711 identifies RPO KL9 as stop/start on 2021β2023 Silverado 1500 trucks. Whether KL9 changes the battery is not yet sourced.
AGM or flooded: what GM specified, by generation
An AGM (absorbed glass mat) battery is sealed and holds its electrolyte in glass mats; a flooded battery uses free liquid.
π On the Spec Sheet: GM’s original-equipment battery bulletin (15-06-03-002K, February 2018, model years 2016β2018 only) says GM uses flooded, AGM and stop/start AGM auxiliary batteries; the label shows part number, CCA and type.
| Applies To | OE type | ACDelco listing | What It Includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silverado/Sierra LD/HD group, 2016β2018, gas V8 | Flooded | 94R/PG | 720 OE CCA; 800 service CCA |
| Same group, 2016β2018, gas V6 and diesel V8 | Flooded | 48PG | 730 OE CCA; 730 service CCA |
| Same group, 2016β2018, HD gas V8 | AGM | 48AGM | 760 service CCA |
| 2019 and later, all engines |
2016β2018: flooded and AGM both appear
In that bulletin, gas V8 and V6/diesel listings are flooded; the HD gas V8 is AGM.
2019 and later: what the record says
We found no GM document stating a required type for 2019 and later. Retailer and GM-portal listings disagree on it, and both are cross-checks.
What “AGM-spec’d” means for a replacement
π« Fits But Shouldn’t: A flooded battery with the right group number can install in a truck GM specified with AGM. Whether that suits your VIN is not yet sourced; match your label’s type.
β Do This: Read the type on your label, then ask a GM dealer parts specialist: “For my VIN, does GM specify AGM, and is a flooded unit acceptable?”
Will a 2014β2018 battery fit a 2019+ Silverado 1500?
GM’s bulletin covers 2016β2018 only, so a 2014β2015 battery is outside any document we retrieved.
The 2019 LD and 2022 LTD carry-overs
The 2019 LD and 2022 LTD are listed separately from the redesigned trucks, and their battery is not yet sourced. Your VIN build sheet or RPO label shows which you have; see our Silverado 1500 trim levels guide.
Same group number, different type
Retailers list a 94R for the 2019 LD, and GM’s parts portal lists a flooded 94R/PG for 2014β2021. Both are cross-checks, so match the type as well as the group.
Auxiliary and second batteries
Forums are the only source for second-battery claims on 2019 and later trucks, so we omit them. The 2016β2018 bulletin says, “AUX battery is same as main battery.”
Group 48, 94R and 49 AGM batteries by published spec
These are published part specifications, not fitment; Section 3 says which truck takes which. Nothing here was tested or rated.
| BCI group | ACDelco AGM listing | Service CCA (SAE) | Case length | Applies To |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 48 | 48AGM | 760 | 278 mm | Part specification; fitment per Section 3 |
| 94R | 94RAGM | 850 | 315 mm | Part specification; fitment per Section 3 |
| 49 | 49AGM | 900 | 353 mm | Part specification; fitment per Section 3 |
Note: ACDelco “CCA (Service)” values from GM Service Bulletin 15-06-03-002K; case lengths from Section 2 (secondary source). Reserve capacity:
CCA: read the standard before comparing
π What This Spec Means: CCA is a rated starting-current figure. GM’s bulletin flags SAE-versus-EN confusion, so compare like with like.
Reading an “original equipment replacement” listing
The bulletin says the correct ACDelco warranty replacement is the catalog entry marked “Original Equipment Replacement.” A longer case carries higher published CCA here, a specification trade, not a quality claim.
Fitment traps and where to verify on your truck
Before you buy, confirm group, CCA and type on the truck itself.
Traps that look like a fit
- Right number, wrong type: the same group can be flooded or AGM.
- Close length: 94R, 48 and 49 differ by about 1.5 in each.
- Retailer disagreement: one 2019 listing returned eight or more groups.
- CCA mismatch: compare SAE with SAE.
Where to confirm on your truck
- The label on top of your current battery.
- The owner’s manual Vehicle Care β Battery section.
- A dealer VIN build sheet.
- The RPO or Service Parts ID label.

Silverado 1500 battery FAQ
1. What group battery does a 2019 Silverado 1500 use?
The Silverado 1500 battery group depends on engine, T1XX versus LD build, and stop/start; read your battery label.
2. Does the 5.3L Silverado take a 94R or a 48?
Not yet sourced for 2019 and later. GM’s 2016β2018 bulletin lists a 94R/PG for gas V8s; confirm your Silverado 1500 battery label.
3. Does a Silverado 1500 need an AGM battery?
GM lists both AGM and flooded for 2016β2018; 2019 and later is unsourced, so match the type on your Silverado 1500 battery label.
4. Can a flooded battery go in a Silverado with stop/start?
Not established here. GM lists a separate stop/start AGM auxiliary type, so match the type printed on your Silverado 1500 battery label.
5. Does the 3.0L Duramax Silverado have two batteries?
Not yet sourced. Your model year’s owner’s manual settles the 3.0L Duramax Silverado 1500 battery count; forums are not a source.
6. What’s the difference between group 94R and 48?
Same width and height; a 94R is 315 mm long and a 48 is 278 mm, which changes Silverado 1500 battery tray fit.
7. What CCA does a Silverado 1500 need?
Use the SAE CCA on your Silverado 1500 battery label; ACDelco AGM service ratings are 760 (Group 48), 850 (94R) and 900 (49).
8. Is the 2019 Silverado 1500 LD battery the same as the 2019 Silverado 1500?
Not yet sourced. The LD is listed separately, so confirm its Silverado 1500 battery on the label or VIN build sheet.
9. Will a 2018 Silverado battery fit a 2019?
GM’s bulletin ends at 2018, so it is unconfirmed; compare group, type and CCA against the 2019 Silverado 1500 battery label.
10. Where do I find my Silverado’s battery group size?
Read the top label on the current Silverado 1500 battery, then check the owner’s manual or a dealer VIN build sheet.
Conclusion
The label on your current battery and your owner’s manual are the final check for any Silverado 1500 battery. Match group, type and SAE CCA to what GM printed for your engine and year, and treat every flagged cell on this page as open until confirmed.
