Silverado Running Boards vs Nerf Bars for Your Exact Cab and Year
Silverado running boards and nerf bars overlap: GM titles even its narrow 4-inch round step a running board. See which part matches your cab and year.

Table of Contents
Running boards or nerf bars? It depends on your cab
On a Silverado 1500, cab style decides which step you can buy; step style comes second.
Start with cab style, not bed length
GM sells separate running boards for the Regular, Double and Crew Cab, and one part name can point to different trucks. Bed length isn’t a variable on GM’s step listings.
To match a part, use the table, then the fitment traps; if you’re cross-shopping or upgrading, compare widths and the load statement.
What this guide covers
It covers the 2019–2027 Silverado 1500 and 2022 LTD; Silverado 1500 specs by configuration has the full cab-and-bed breakdown. GM lists the 2019 LD, earlier trucks and 2500HD/3500HD separately.
ℹ️ Safety Note: Steps are load-bearing parts. The load figure here is GM’s statement for specific parts, not a rating for your truck or a person. Verify part number, load statement and mounting instructions for your VIN before buying or installing.
📍 Check your own vehicle first: Specifications vary by build date, package and market, and two trucks with the same badge can be built differently. Before you buy anything based on this page, confirm against the application table on the GM Accessories listing and your VIN build sheet. If your vehicle disagrees with this page, your vehicle is right.
Nerf bars vs running boards: what the terms mean on a Silverado

The two terms overlap, and GM’s titles show it.
How GM titles its parts
As of October 2026, GM titles its fixed 4-inch round and 6-inch rectangular parts “Running Boards,” and the removable set “Assist Steps.” Older listings such as 84106506 still say “Assist Steps.”
How sellers use “nerf bar”
Here, “nerf bar” means a narrow round step like GM’s 4-inch part; compare width, length and part number.
Which steps fit a Silverado Regular, Double or Crew Cab?

GM lists Silverado 1500 steps by cab style and model year:

| Crew | 4-inch round | 84011355 | 2019–2027 | 90.59 in |
| Crew | Sport Step | 84742421 | 2019–2027 | 86.68 in |
| Crew | Removable steps | 85554009 | 2023–2026 | 28.23 in (surface) |
| Double | 6-inch rectangular | 86574747 | 2019–2027 | 81.5 in |
| Double | 4-inch round | 84011358 | 2019–2026 | 83.98 in |
| Regular | 6-inch rectangular | 86574768 | 2019–2027 | 60.98 in |
| Regular | 4-inch round | — | — |
Source: GM Accessories listings, 15 October 2026. GM’s fitment tables call Regular “Standard Cab” and Double “Extended Cab.” The 2022 LTD is listed on all but the removable steps.
Crew Cab
Sport Step 84742421 is also listed for 2020–2026 2500HD/3500HD Crew Cabs.
Double Cab
Match part numbers, not labels: GM titles say “Double Cab,” its fitment tables “Extended Cab Pickup.” The 4-inch round listing stops at 2026; see how the three cab styles differ.
Regular Cab
Only the 6-inch rectangular is listed for 2019–2027; we found no 4-inch round.
How 4-inch round and 6-inch rectangular steps compare
Compare surface width and length.
Stepping surface: nominal vs listed width
| Style | GM part | Applies to | Surface width |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4-inch round | 84011355 (Crew) | 2019–2027 | 4.093 in |
| 4-inch round | 84011358 (Double) | 2019–2026 | 4.142 in |
| 6-inch rectangular | 86574696 (Crew) | 2019–2027 | 5.98 in |
| 6-inch rectangular | 86574747 (Double), 86574768 (Regular) | 2019–2027 | 6.02 in |
| 6-inch rectangular | 84106506 (Double) | 2016–2018; 2019 LD | 6.4 in |
Source: GM Accessories listings, 15 October 2026.
🔍 What This Spec Means: “4-inch” and “6-inch” are nominal; GM lists 4.093–4.142 in and 5.98–6.02 in. A wider surface means more stepping area.
Length by cab
On the 6-inch parts, length runs from 60.98 in (Regular) to 89.84 in (Crew).
Removable steps and ground clearance
GM’s removable steps list a 4.88 in surface width, attach only to GM rocker protectors, and give no ground-clearance figure.
How much weight can a Silverado step hold?
GM states 300 lbs on its current round, rectangular and Sport Step listings, not on every part.
What GM’s listings state
📐 On the Spec Sheet: GM’s Double Cab 4-inch round listing (84011358; 2019–2026 Silverado 1500 and 2022 LTD) says the board is “rigorously weight- and fatigue-tested to maintain stability under heavy loads up to 300 lbs. with minimal flex.”
What they do not state
The pages don’t say whether 300 lbs is per step or total; the removable steps and 84106506 list no load figure.
⚠️ Watch Out: Don’t read 300 lbs as a per-person limit; GM doesn’t say that.
How steps mount
GM’s installation sheet for kit 84066569, for a 2026 Silverado 1500 2WD, mounts the step to the rocker inner panel and lists no load rating.
✅ Do This: Ask a GM parts desk, with your VIN, whether 300 lbs is per step or total for your part number; have a qualified installer confirm mounting.
Which Silverado trims and packages include factory steps
This page doesn’t list factory steps by trim; we haven’t sourced GM’s order guide.
Factory, dealer-installed or accessory
The parts above are GM Accessories listings; your truck’s build decides what it already has.
Crew Cab trims and the removable steps
GM’s removable assist steps fit the 2023–2026 Crew Cab only and need GM rocker protectors; see Z71, Trail Boss and ZR2 compared.
Where trim content is confirmed
Use your VIN build sheet or GM’s order guide.
Steps that look right but won’t fit your Silverado
Will 2019 Silverado LD running boards fit a new-body 2019 Silverado 1500? No, not by GM’s listings.
2019 LD, 2022 LTD and 2027
🚫 Fits But Shouldn’t: GM’s Double Cab 6-inch listing 84106506 covers the 2019 LD and 2016–2018 trucks (6.4 in surface width); new-body Double Cabs use 86574747 (6.02 in).
GM lists the 2022 LTD on the 2019-onward parts; see how the 2022 LTD differs from the refreshed truck. For 2027 it lists the 6-inch, Crew Cab 4-inch round and Sport Step parts, not the Double Cab 4-inch round or removable steps; see 2027 Silverado 1500 trims.
Same name, different truck
“Crew Cab 6-Inch Rectangular” is 86574696 for the 1500 and 86574744 for 2500HD/3500HD Crew Cabs (2020–2026).
✅ Do This: Enter your VIN on GM’s listing and confirm part number and years; install per GM’s instruction sheet.

GM’s round, rectangular and Sport Step listings state stability under loads up to 300 lbs, without saying per step or total. Confirm with a GM parts desk.

Part by part: GM lists 2027 on the 6-inch, Crew Cab 4-inch round and Sport Step running boards, not the Double Cab 4-inch round.
Before you order a Silverado step
Cab style and body generation decide what fits; style comes after. Match your truck to a GM part number, then check the listing’s years against your VIN before ordering.
