n, grade, cab and bed choices determine towing and payload ratings.

Tundra specs by configuration: find your truck’s numbers

A third-generation Toyota Tundra tows, carries and measures differently depending on five choices: engine, drivetrain, grade, cab and bed. Toyota’s own charts rate 2022–2025 Tundras at 8,300 to 12,000 lb of towing and 1,485 to 1,940 lb of payload, and only one build sits at each top figure.

Every number here is a US-market figure from Toyota USA documents. Toyota Australia publishes its own Tundra ratings in kilograms, and those don’t apply to a US truck.

Which Tundra buyer are you?

  • If you’re cross-shopping an F-150 or Silverado, start with the engines, then the towing matrix, then the buying section near the end.
  • If you’re sizing for a specific trailer, go straight to the towing matrix, then payload and GCWR.
  • If you’re choosing a cab, bed and grade, read the dimensions section and the table of which combinations Toyota actually builds.
  • If you’re matching a part to a 2022-or-newer Tundra, use the bed lengths, the factory tire sizes and the fitment traps.
  • If you’re moving up from a 2007–2021 Tundra, read the engine section and the fitment traps before you carry anything over.
  • If you’re shopping a used 2022–2025 truck, check the model-year changes and where to confirm the configuration on the truck itself.

How to read the numbers on this page

Toyota printed identical towing and payload charts in its 2022–2025 brochures, so those four model years share one matrix.

Toyota’s 2026 chart wasn’t available at our last review; for a 2026 truck, its own labels are the answer.

ℹ️ Safety Note: Tow, payload and tire figures on this page are Toyota’s published ratings for specific configurations, shown for comparison. Exceeding a rating affects braking, steering and stability, not just performance. Confirm every limit against your truck’s door-jamb labels and owner’s manual for your VIN, and have hitch and trailer-brake setups checked by a qualified installer before you tow.

📍 Check your own vehicle first: Specifications vary by build date, package and market, and two Tundras with the same badge can be built differently. Before you buy anything based on this page, confirm against the tire and loading information placard and the certification label on the driver’s door jamb, the window sticker or VIN build sheet, and the towing section of the owner’s manual. If your truck disagrees with this page, your truck is right.

Which Tundra engine does each trim get?

Toyota Tundra i-FORCE gas V6 compared with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, showing horsepower, torque, electric motor and battery.
The Toyota Tundra hybrid adds torque, but the highest tow rating belongs to a gas configuration.

The engine decides which grades, tow ratings and payload figures are even possible, so it’s the first thing to pin down. Toyota’s 2022–2026 Tundra brochures list two powertrains, both a twin-turbo V6 with a 10-speed automatic; there is no V8 in this generation.

i-FORCE vs i-FORCE MAX output by grade

The i-FORCE MAX hybrid adds an electric motor rated at 48 hp and 184 lb-ft to the same 3.4L engine. You can only get it on Limited and above.

The hybrid’s EPA rating for a 2024 4×2 is 20 mpg city, 24 highway, 22 combined, on fueleconomy.gov’s 2024 Tundra hybrid listing. Toyota lists most gas 4×2 grades at 18/23/20 mpg.

🔍 What This Spec Means: More torque doesn’t mean a higher tow rating: the highest-rated Tundra for towing is a gas truck.

Why the SR makes less power

The base SR grade uses a lower-output calibration of the same gas engine. Toyota rated it at 348 hp for 2022 and 358 hp for 2023 through 2026.

Since early 2024, a factory-installed TRD Performance upgrade raises output to 421 hp (gas) or 469 hp (hybrid).

3.4L or 3.5L: the same engine

Toyota’s 2021–2022 press releases said 3.5 liters; its brochures say 3.4. Both describe the same 3,445 cc V6.

Tundra towing capacity by configuration, 2022–2026

Toyota Tundra 12,000-pound maximum towing configuration: gas i-FORCE SR5 4x2 Double Cab with 6.5-foot bed.
Only the gas Toyota Tundra SR5 4×2 Double Cab with the 6.5-foot bed reaches 12,000 lb of towing.

Toyota rates the 2022–2025 Tundra to tow 8,300 to 12,000 lb, calculated under the SAE J2807 method. Only one build reaches 12,000 lb: the gas i-FORCE SR5 4×2 Double Cab with the 6.5-ft bed. Every SR is rated 8,300 lb, whatever its cab, bed or drivetrain.

📐 On the Spec Sheet: Toyota’s 2024 Tundra brochure prints maximum towing by engine, drivetrain, grade, cab and bed on page 25, and its footnote states the ratings were “calculated with the new SAE J2807 method.” Toyota’s 2022, 2023 and 2025 brochures carry the same figures.

Source: Toyota’s 2024 Tundra brochure, page 25, cross-checked against the 2022, 2023 and 2025 brochures. Hybrid 4×4 TRD Pro (CrewMax) is rated 11,175 lb and hybrid 4×4 Capstone (CrewMax) 10,340 lb; Toyota prints each as a single figure without a bed column. “Not built” means Toyota doesn’t offer that combination for that grade. Ratings assume the truck’s curb weight; Toyota notes that cargo, occupants and added equipment reduce what you can tow.

The one Tundra rated for 12,000 pounds

The 12,000-lb rating belongs to a single cell: gas, 4×2, SR5, Double Cab, 6.5-ft bed. Change only the drivetrain to 4×4 and the same truck is rated 11,200 lb; the reason four-wheel drive costs rating is covered in why four-wheel drive lowers a truck’s tow rating.

The highest-rated hybrid is the 4×2 Limited CrewMax with the 5.5-ft bed, at 11,450 lb.

⚠️ Watch Out: “Tows up to 12,000 lb” in an ad describes one configuration. A 4×4 Platinum or 1794 Edition CrewMax with the 6.5-ft bed is rated 10,890 lb — more than half a ton less. Size the trailer to the row that matches the truck you’re buying.

Why every SR stops at 8,300 pounds

Toyota prints 8,300 lb for every SR: 4×2 and 4×4, Double Cab 6.5-ft, Double Cab 8.1-ft and CrewMax 5.5-ft. Buying an SR to save money caps you there, regardless of how it’s optioned.

Hitch equipment also differed by grade and year; see the model-year table below. A truck’s rating and its hitch receiver’s rating are separate limits — see how a hitch receiver’s rating differs from the truck’s tow rating.

Gas vs hybrid towing by grade

On the Limited CrewMax 5.5-ft, the hybrid is rated slightly higher than gas: 11,450 vs 11,350 lb in 4×2, and 11,170 vs 11,120 lb in 4×4. On Platinum and 1794 Edition CrewMax trucks, the hybrid ranges from 30 lb lower to 110 lb higher than the matching gas truck.

The hybrid never reaches the 12,000-lb ceiling. That figure exists only on a gas SR5.

What changes for 2026

For 2026, Toyota made the hitch and 7/4-pin connector standard on every grade, including SR, and made the 32.2-gallon fuel tank standard across the lineup. Toyota’s 2026 towing chart was not available when this page was last reviewed, so the matrix above is not confirmed for 2026.

✅ Do This: Before you buy for a specific trailer, ask the dealer for the towing rating tied to that truck’s VIN, and ask what class the installed hitch receiver is rated for. Have a certified hitch installer set up and test the trailer brakes before the first tow.

Tundra payload, GVWR and GCWR by configuration

Toyota rates 2022–2025 Tundra payload from 1,485 to 1,940 lb. The 1,940-lb maximum belongs to the gas SR or SR5 4×2 Double Cab with the 6.5-ft bed — and the hybrid only carries less than gas on the CrewMax 5.5-ft bed.

🔍 What This Spec Means: Payload is everything the truck carries on top of its curb weight: passengers, cargo, anything bolted on after it left the factory, and a trailer’s tongue weight pressing on the hitch. GVWR is the most the loaded truck may weigh. GCWR is the most the truck and a loaded trailer may weigh together.

Source: Toyota’s 2024 Tundra brochure, page 25, cross-checked against the 2022 and 2025 brochures. Hybrid 4×4 TRD Pro (CrewMax) is rated 1,600 lb and Capstone (CrewMax) 1,485 lb, each printed as a single figure. Across the lineup, Toyota lists GVWR from 6,990 to 7,780 lb and curb weight from 5,095 to 6,185 lb.

Which Tundra carries the most payload

Two trucks share the 1,940-lb top rating: the gas 4×2 SR and SR5, both Double Cab with the 6.5-ft bed. The same SR5 is also the 12,000-lb towing truck, but the SR version is capped at 8,300 lb of towing — so “most payload” and “most towing” only overlap on the SR5.

How much payload the hybrid gives up

On the CrewMax 5.5-ft bed, the hybrid carries less than the matching gas truck: Limited 4×2 1,665 vs 1,755 lb, Limited 4×4 1,605 vs 1,740 lb, Platinum and 1794 Edition 4×4 1,565 vs 1,665 lb. That’s 80 to 135 lb gone before you load anything.

On the CrewMax 6.5-ft bed, the picture flips or nearly evens out. The hybrid 4×4 Limited is rated 1,665 lb against the gas truck’s 1,645 lb. Toyota lists a higher GVWR for that hybrid 6.5-ft truck than for its 5.5-ft sibling: 7,750 vs 7,615 lb.

🚫 Fits But Shouldn’t: A load plan built on a gas Tundra’s payload doesn’t carry over to a hybrid CrewMax 5.5-ft. The 4×4 Limited hybrid is rated 135 lb below the gas version, so recheck payload from the hybrid’s own row or door-jamb placard.

GCWR by grade, and why it matters for towing

GCWR caps the whole rig, so a heavy truck load plus a heavy trailer can exceed it even when each is under its own rating. Toyota’s 2025 Product Information sheet lists GCWR from 15,204 lb on the lowest-rated SR to 17,700 lb on some SR5 and hybrid configurations, with the Capstone at 16,525 lb.

A trailer’s tongue weight counts against payload as well as towing — the arithmetic is laid out in how tongue weight eats into payload.

✅ Do This: Read the payload figure on the tire and loading information placard on the driver’s door jamb of the exact truck you’re buying. Before a long tow, weigh the loaded truck and trailer at a certified scale and compare each figure against GVWR, the axle ratings and GCWR.

Tundra bed sizes and dimensions by cab

Bed length and overall length decide what fits in the bed, what fits in your garage, and which tonneau cover or liner to order. The Tundra comes with three bed lengths — 5.5, 6.5 and 8.1 ft — but those are nominal labels; the measured inside lengths are below.

Source: Toyota Tundra brochures for 2022, 2024 and 2025 (dimension tables) and Toyota’s 2025 Product Information sheet.

Bed length for each cab and bed option

Every Tundra bed measures 58.7 in wide, 48.7 in between the wheel wells, and 20.9 in deep, per Toyota’s 2024 brochure. Only the length changes.

Nominal labels round differently from truck to truck — the same pattern explained in why nominal bed lengths don’t match the tape measure. Order accessories by the inside length and model years, not the label.

✅ Do This: Before ordering a tonneau cover or bed liner, confirm the cab and bed from the window sticker, then check that the product’s maker lists 2022-and-newer Tundra fitment for that exact bed length. Don’t rely on a listing that names only 2007–2021 Tundras.

CrewMax vs Double Cab: length, wheelbase and bed

The CrewMax 5.5-ft and Double Cab 6.5-ft are the same overall length (233.6 in) and wheelbase (145.7 in). You’re trading 12 inches of bed for the CrewMax’s larger cabin.

A CrewMax 6.5-ft gives back the Double Cab’s bed length, but it’s 12 in longer overall (245.6 in). Measure your garage before choosing it. Overall width is 80.2 in, or 81.6 in on the TRD Pro; height is 78.0 in.

Fuel tank size by grade and year

For 2022–2025, Toyota fitted a 22.5-gallon tank to SR and SR5 and a 32.2-gallon tank to Limited and above. For 2026, the 32.2-gallon tank is standard on every grade.

Which Tundra cab, bed and engine combos exist?

Not every engine, cab and bed pairing is sold, and a few published charts list combinations Toyota doesn’t build. This grid shows what Toyota’s 2022–2025 towing charts actually rate.

Cab, bed and engine availability by grade

The 8.1-ft long bed comes only on a Double Cab SR or SR5. No CrewMax has it, so a chart showing a “CrewMax 8.1-ft” rating is describing a truck that doesn’t exist.

The hybrid starts at Limited. TRD Pro and Capstone come only as hybrid 4×4 CrewMax trucks.

Tow hitch and trailer-brake equipment by year

For 2022–2024, the SR’s hitch and 4/7-pin connector came with the optional SR Tow Package; SR5 and up had them standard. From 2026, every grade gets the hitch and connector as standard.

On a used 2022–2024 SR, check for the hitch receiver and wiring connector before assuming the truck is ready to tow anything.

✅ Do This: Before ordering floor liners, confirm the cab (Double Cab or CrewMax) and model year from the window sticker, and order by both. The VIN decodes to the exact grade and packages at any Toyota dealer.

Tundra wheel and tire sizes by trim

Grade and package decide which wheels and tires a Tundra leaves the factory on, and the placard on the door jamb sets what any replacement must match. Toyota’s 2022–2025 brochures list these factory sizes:

Factory wheel and tire size by grade

The SR is the only grade on P-metric (passenger-rated) tires; the rest use the sizes above. The TRD Pro pairs its 285-width tires with an 81.6-in overall width, 1.4 in wider than other Tundras.

A different size changes more than looks — see what a larger tire does to speedometer accuracy. Load index and load range aren’t printed in Toyota’s brochures. The door-jamb placard gives the original tire size and pressures, and the original tire’s sidewall carries its load index and load range.

Bolt pattern, center bore and lug thread for 2022+ Tundras

Toyota’s brochures don’t print the bolt pattern, center bore or lug thread, and the figures circulating online for the 2022+ truck come from retailer and dealer pages rather than a Toyota document.

Until you have those three figures from Toyota or the wheel maker’s published fitment, don’t buy a wheel on a listing’s word alone.

✅ Do This: Before buying tires, have a tire shop read the original size from the door-jamb placard and the load index and load range from the factory tire’s sidewall, then match or exceed both. Before buying wheels, ask the wheel maker for its published bolt pattern, center bore and load rating, and confirm all three against Toyota’s specification for your model year.

Tundra fitment traps: what fits but shouldn’t

Each trap below is a purchase that looks right on a listing and goes wrong on the truck, paired with the figure that settles it.

2007–2021 wheels on a 2022+ Tundra

The 2022 Tundra was a new generation, and wheel specifications should not be assumed to carry over from the 2007–2021 truck. The bolt-pattern figures quoted online for both generations trace to retailers and forums rather than Toyota.

🚫 Fits But Shouldn’t: A wheel that slides onto the studs is not proof of fitment. Bolt pattern, center bore, lug seat and load rating all have to match the 2022+ truck’s specification, confirmed from Toyota and the wheel maker, not from the fact that the lugs thread on.

Torquing alloy wheels to the steel-wheel figure

Toyota specifies different lug-nut torque for the Tundra’s two wheel types. For the 2022 Tundra and Tundra hybrid, Toyota’s technical instructions list 154 ft·lbf (209 N·m) for steel wheels and 97 ft·lbf (131 N·m) for aluminum wheels.

📐 On the Spec Sheet: Toyota’s technical instructions for safety recall 22TA05, filed with NHTSA, list lug-nut torque for the 2022 Tundra and Tundra hybrid as 209 N·m (154 ft·lbf) with steel wheels and 131 N·m (97 ft·lbf) with aluminum wheels. Confirm the figure for 2023–2026 trucks in that year’s owner’s manual.

An SR moving from its steel wheels to alloys needs the alloy figure, not the one it was built with.

Reading the max-tow truck as the max-payload truck

Only the gas 4×2 SR5 Double Cab 6.5-ft holds both top ratings. The SR version of that body keeps 1,940 lb of payload but tows 8,300 lb.

Figures from the wrong market or a truck Toyota doesn’t build

US search results mix in Toyota Australia’s metric ratings, a Canadian dealer’s 2026 figure that appears nowhere in Toyota USA’s charts, and at least one US table rating a CrewMax 8.1-ft, which Toyota doesn’t build.

⚠️ Watch Out: If a figure doesn’t match a row in Toyota USA’s chart for your exact grade, engine, drivetrain, cab and bed, don’t use it. Go back to the matrix above or to your truck’s door-jamb label.

✅ Do This: Before fitting aftermarket wheels, ask a Toyota service technician or tire shop to torque the lugs with a torque wrench to Toyota’s figure for your wheel type and model year, and to confirm bolt pattern and center bore against Toyota’s specification.

Window sticker and VIN for the exact configuration

On a used truck without a sticker, a Toyota dealer can decode the VIN to the original build.

Owner’s manual chapters and open recalls

The owner’s manual’s towing section covers Toyota’s procedure and limits for that year. Recalls are an ownership matter, but it costs nothing to check open recalls for a specific VIN before you buy.

✅ Do This: Download the free Tundra configuration check sheet below and fill in the five choices from the window sticker before you compare any figure.

Which Tundra configuration fits your job?

The right Tundra depends on whether the trailer, the load or the cabin matters most, because Toyota’s charts reward different builds for each.

Heavy trailer first

If the trailer is the priority, the gas 4×2 SR5 Double Cab 6.5-ft (12,000 lb) leads, and every gas 4×2 grade except the SR rates above 11,000 lb. Four-wheel drive costs 230 to 800 lb of rating on the same body; the SR is 8,300 lb either way, which rules it out for anything heavier.

The hybrid adds torque but not rating: its best is 11,450 lb, on the 4×2 Limited CrewMax 5.5-ft.

Payload and bed space first

For hauling, the gas SR or SR5 4×2 Double Cab 6.5-ft (1,940 lb) leads, and the Double Cab 8.1-ft gives the longest bed at 96.5 in inside. If you want the hybrid and haul often, the CrewMax 6.5-ft hybrid holds payload close to or above the gas truck, unlike the 5.5-ft.

Cross-shopping the F-150 and Silverado

Each truck’s headline maximum belongs to one configuration, so compare like-for-like rows using how the F-150, Silverado and Ram compare on towing and payload across the F-150, Silverado and Ram, then match a Tundra row from the matrix above.

Weigh one row against one row, not one brand’s maximum against another’s.
