Does the Tundra have a hitch? The short answer by year
Every 2026 Toyota Tundra leaves the factory with a hitch receiver and 7/4-pin connector, the base SR included. Before 2026, the answer depends on year, grade and engine. A hitch has never guaranteed a brake controller.
2026 and newer
Toyota made the hitch and connector standard on every 2026 grade.
2022–2025
SR5 and above came with the hitch. The SR needed the optional SR Tow Package.
2021 and older
Second-generation trucks split by engine and Tow Package, and the built-in controller arrived for 2015–2016.
- Shopping a used Tundra: start with the year table.
- Buying an SR: read the 2022–2026 section before buying a braked trailer.
- Sizing for a trailer: read the ratings section, then our full Tundra specs by configuration.
ℹ️ Safety Note: Hitch equipment, brake controllers and tow ratings all depend on your exact build. A trailer heavier than your setup’s lowest rating affects braking and stability, not just performance. Confirm every limit against your truck’s owner’s manual, door-jamb labels and receiver before hitching anything, and have trailer brakes set up by a qualified installer.
📍 Check your own vehicle first: Two Tundras with the same badge can leave the factory with different tow equipment. Before you buy anything based on this page, confirm against the window sticker or VIN build sheet, the receiver itself, the dash area near the driver’s knee, and the towing section of the owner’s manual. If your truck disagrees with this page, your truck is right.

2022–2026 Tundra: does the SR get a hitch and controller?

The third-generation SR is the one grade where the hitch answer changed partway through.
2022–2025 SR and the SR Tow Package
On a 2022–2025 SR, the hitch was optional. Package records for 2025 SRs list the SR Tow Package as adding a tow hitch and a 7-pin connector with a 4-pin converter. No brake controller appears in that list.
2026: hitch standard on every grade
📐 On the Spec Sheet: Toyota’s 2026 Tundra announcement, dated July 22, 2025, made a tow hitch and 7/4-pin connector standard on all models, including the SR grade.
The SR5 and higher grades keep the Integrated Trailer Brake Controller (ITBC). Toyota’s equipment text describes a Class-IV receiver with 7-pin/4-pin wiring, plus a controller with brake-type, gain and manual-output controls shown on the multi-information display.
🚫 Fits But Shouldn’t: A 2026 SR hooks up to an electric-brake trailer, but nothing in the truck will run those brakes. The proof is Toyota’s feature lists: the ITBC appears on the SR5 and up, and the SR’s list omits it.
What we know about 2027
Toyota revealed the 2027 Tundra and said full specifications follow in fall 2026. Until then, don’t assume its tow equipment.
2007–2021 Tundra: tow package, pre-wire, or built-in controller?
On a second-generation truck, the engine decides the controller answer.
2007–2014: pre-wire only
At launch, the optional V8 Tow Package included a seven-pin connector and was pre-wired for a trailer brake controller. Toyota didn’t fit its own controller in these years, so any controller here is aftermarket.
2015: 5.7L with Tow Package
Toyota made an integrated controller available on trucks with the 5.7L V8 and Tow Package, and Edmunds noted it arrived late in the model year. The 4.6L kept a pre-wire for an aftermarket unit.
2016–2021: when it became standard
📐 On the Spec Sheet: Toyota’s 2016 Tundra release lists the trailer brake controller as now standard with the 5.7-liter V8, with controls by the driver’s knee.
Toyota’s 2020 release lists the 5.7L as the only engine, with a standard tow hitch receiver and Tow Package plus an integrated trailer brake controller. It describes the receiver as a one-piece unit bolted into the frame with 12 high-strength bolts.
Pre-wire vs built-in brake controller: what you actually get
A pre-wire and a controller are different purchases.
What the factory controller does
The ITBC sends braking power to a trailer’s electric brakes and lets you set brake type and gain from the dash. It does nothing for a trailer without electric brakes.
When you need one (and when you don’t)
NHTSA’s towing safety brochure explains that surge brakes are hydraulic and operated at the trailer coupler, not by the tow vehicle. State laws set which trailers must have brakes, so check yours before buying.
🔍 What This Spec Means: “Brake controller pre-wire” on a window sticker means a connector waiting for a controller. You still have to buy and install one before electric trailer brakes will work.
What the factory receiver is rated for, and what caps it
A factory hitch receiver is one limit among several.
Weight-carrying vs weight-distributing ratings
Toyota publishes separate maximum trailer and tongue weights for dead-weight (weight-carrying) and weight-distributing hitches, and they vary by configuration. The lowest rating anywhere in the chain governs: truck, receiver, ball mount or ball. The difference between receiver and truck ratings works the same way on any pickup. Toyota calculates Tundra tow ratings under SAE J2807.
Tongue weight comes out of payload
Tongue weight counts against payload, so check Tundra payload by trim alongside the hitch.
✅ Do This: Ask the dealer or a qualified hitch installer for three things in writing. Ask for the weight-carrying and weight-distributing limits in that truck’s owner’s manual, the rating marked on its receiver, and the payload on its door-jamb placard.
Hitch and controller traps to check before you buy
Each of these looks fine on a listing and fails at the boat ramp.
Five traps
- 2026 SR: standard hitch, no listed controller.
- 2022–2025 SR: no hitch unless it has the SR Tow Package.
- “Pre-wire”: a connector, not a controller.
- 2015 5.7L: the controller was optional and late, so check the dash.
- Any year: the lowest-rated part caps the setup.
Where to confirm on the truck
Check the window sticker or VIN build sheet for packages, and the lower dash for a controller. Read the receiver’s marked rating, and the owner’s manual for towing limits.
Tundra hitch and brake controller: common questions
1. Does every Tundra have a hitch?
Every 2026 Tundra has a factory hitch and 7/4-pin connector. Earlier Tundras depend on grade, engine and package. Confirm on the window sticker.
2. Does the Tundra SR have a hitch?
A 2026 Tundra SR does. A 2022–2025 SR has one only with the SR Tow Package. Check the window sticker.
3. Does the Tundra have a built-in brake controller?
Most do. Tundras with the 5.7L got it standard from 2016, and 2022–2026 SR5-and-up trucks have it. Check the lower dash.
4. Does the 2026 Tundra SR have a brake controller?
Toyota’s 2026 Tundra SR feature list doesn’t include one, though the SR5 and up list it. Confirm on that truck’s window sticker.
5. What does brake controller pre-wire mean on a Tundra?
A Tundra pre-wire is a connector for a controller, not the controller itself. You still need to buy and install one.
6. Did the 4.6L Tundra get a built-in controller?
No. Toyota tied the Tundra’s integrated controller to the 5.7L V8, so 4.6L trucks need an aftermarket unit. Check the dash.
7. When did the Tundra get an integrated trailer brake controller?
The Tundra controller was optional on 2015 5.7L trucks with the Tow Package, then standard with the 5.7L from 2016.
8. Do surge brakes need a Tundra brake controller?
No. Surge brakes are hydraulic and work at the trailer coupler, so a Tundra’s controller doesn’t operate them.
9. Does the hitch limit how much a Tundra can tow?
Yes. A Tundra setup is capped by its lowest rating: truck, receiver, ball mount or ball. Check each part’s marked rating.
10. Does the 2027 Tundra come with a hitch?
Toyota hasn’t published 2027 Tundra tow equipment yet. It said full specifications arrive in fall 2026.
Before you buy: match the truck to the trailer
A hitch answers one question; a braked trailer asks two more. Before you buy, confirm the receiver, the connector and the controller on that truck’s window sticker or dash. Then check the towing rating for the exact build and the payload on its door-jamb placard.
