Documented Tundra GVWR and GCWR by Cab, Drive and Model Code

Tundra GVWR isn’t one number. In Toyota’s 2022 manual, a 4×2 Double Cab’s GCWR drops 2,450 lb with the SR Package — here’s how to spot it.

Why there’s no single Tundra GVWR

There is no single Tundra GVWR or GCWR for 2022–2026 trucks. Both ratings change with cab, bed, drive, engine, grade and, on base trucks, the SR Package. The 12,000-lb tow figure belongs to one build, not every Tundra.

If you’re comparing builds

Start with the GCWR table by model code, then the GVWR ranges by cab and drive. For the rest of the numbers, see every Tundra build’s factory specs.

If you’re sizing a trailer

Read the three-limit explainer first, then the traps that overload a truck below its tow rating. Buying used? Check the model-year changes before trusting any figure.

ℹ️ Safety Note: GVWR, GCWR, axle ratings and trailer rating are separate limits, and Toyota’s manual says none may be exceeded. Going over one affects braking and stability, not just performance. Treat the figures here as comparison data and confirm them on your truck before hitching anything.

📍 Check your own vehicle first: Ratings vary by model year, model code and package, and two Tundras with the same badge can carry different numbers. Before you buy a truck or a trailer based on this page, read the Certification Label on the driver’s door jamb and the towing table in that model year’s owner’s manual. If your vehicle disagrees with this page, your vehicle is right.

GVWR vs. GCWR vs. payload: which limit you hit first

Vector stacked bar chart comparing Tundra GVWR, GCWR, and payload limits, with tongue weight and cargo shown as separate segments
Payload isn’t a separate spec — it’s GVWR minus curb weight, and tongue weight eats into it before people and gear.

Each rating caps a different weight.

What GVWR caps

Gross vehicle weight rating is the most the loaded truck may weigh, including people, cargo, options and the trailer’s tongue weight. Toyota prints it on the Certification Label on the driver’s door jamb.

What GCWR caps

Gross combination weight rating is the most the loaded truck and loaded trailer may weigh together. Toyota lists it by model code in the owner’s manual towing table, and says its ratings meet the SAE J2807 towing standard.

How payload is derived from GVWR

Payload is GVWR minus curb weight. Toyota calculates its trailer rating for a base truck carrying a driver, one front passenger and the hitch. Extra passengers, cargo and options reduce it.

Tundra GCWR by model code and build

Toyota rates GCWR by the model code printed on each truck’s Certification Label, not by trim name.

The one build rated 17,770 lb

The 4×2 Double Cab with the standard bed, without the SR Package, lists 17,770 lb in both years shown. In the 2025 table, that’s the row carrying the 12,000-lb trailer rating.

Builds rated 17,250 lb

The 4×2 CrewMax short-bed rows for SR5, Limited and Platinum list 17,250 lb. Trailer ratings still differ by grade, so compare trailer ratings for each Tundra trim.

SR Package builds

SR Package trucks share model codes with SR5 trucks but carry lower GCWRs. In 2022 that’s 15,320 lb (Double Cab) and 15,280 lb (CrewMax).

📐 On the Spec Sheet: Toyota’s 2022 Tundra owner’s manual footnotes its GCWR table to say the model code is on the Certification Label. It lists rows with and without the SR Package separately.

Tundra GVWR ranges by cab and drive

Tundra GVWR spans several hundred pounds across 2022 builds, so the cab and drive you choose change what the truck can carry.

Double Cab vs. CrewMax

In 2022, the 4×2 Double Cab range starts higher than the 4×2 CrewMax range.

🔍 What This Spec Means: A higher GVWR doesn’t mean more payload. Payload is GVWR minus curb weight, so a heavier, better-equipped build can have a higher GVWR and still carry less.

What changed from 2022 to 2026, and what 2027 brings

Third-generation Tundra ratings haven’t stayed fixed, so match every figure to its model year.

2026: lower maximum payload

Toyota lists the 2025 Tundra’s maximum payload at 1,940 lb and the 2026 Tundra’s at 1,850 lb. For 2026, it also made the 32.2-gallon fuel tank and a tow hitch with 7/4-pin connector standard on every grade, per Toyota’s 2026 Tundra announcement. Toyota hasn’t linked the payload change to those additions, so read the label rather than assume.

2027: ratings not yet published

Toyota showed the updated truck in the 2027 Tundra reveal on July 21, 2026. Its towing and payload ratings weren’t published as of October 17, 2026. This page will be updated when they are.

Tundra builds that run out of GVWR before the tow rating

Vector illustration showing two identical Tundra trucks with the same model code but different Tundra GVWR-related GCWR ratings of 17,770 lb and 15,320 lb due to the SR Package
SR Package trucks share a model code with SR5 trucks but lose roughly 2,450 lb of GCWR — read the right manual row or you’ll overstate the build.

A Tundra can be under its trailer rating and still overloaded, because other limits apply first.

The SR Package trap

🚫 Fits But Shouldn’t: An SR Package Tundra shares its model code with SR5 trucks, so reading the wrong manual row overstates it. In 2022, the 4×2 Double Cab row lists 15,320 lb GCWR and an 8,300-lb trailer rating with the SR Package, against 17,770 lb GCWR without it.

Tongue weight eats payload

Toyota’s 2025 manual recommends tongue weight of 9–11% of trailer weight. On a 10,000-lb trailer that’s 900–1,100 lb riding on the truck, counted against payload before people and gear. Run your numbers in the Payload & Tongue Weight Calculator and compare payload for each cab and bed.

Hitch thresholds

The same manual requires trailer brakes above 1,000 lb, sway control above 2,000 lb and a weight-distributing hitch above 5,000 lb. It also says current fifth-wheel designs aren’t compatible with the CrewMax short bed.

✅ Do This: Before buying, photograph the truck’s door-jamb Certification Label and ask the dealer for its model code and package list. Have a qualified technician confirm the hitch receiver’s printed weight rating covers your trailer and tongue weight.

Where to find your Tundra’s exact weight ratings

Four places on the truck and in its paperwork settle every figure on this page.

On the door jamb

  1. Certification Label: GVWR, the front and rear axle ratings, and the model code.
  2. Load-carrying label: the maximum passenger and cargo weight for that specific truck.

In the owner’s manual

  1. Towing table: find your model code, then read GCWR and trailer rating. Toyota’s 2022 Tundra owner’s manual towing section shows the format.
  2. Window sticker: lists the grade and packages the truck was built with, including the SR Package.

Tundra GVWR and GCWR FAQ

1. What is the GVWR of a Toyota Tundra?

Tundra GVWR varies by build; Toyota’s 2022 table spans 6,990–7,780 lb across cab and drive combinations. Confirm on your door-jamb Certification Label.

2. What is the GCWR of a Toyota Tundra?

Most 2022 Tundra builds without the SR Package list 17,250 lb GCWR; the 4×2 Double Cab standard bed lists 17,770 lb. Check your model code’s row.

3. Do all Tundra trims share one GCWR?

No. In Toyota’s 2022 Tundra manual, GCWR changes by model code and SR Package, from 15,280 lb to 17,770 lb.

4. Where is the GVWR on a Tundra?

The Tundra’s GVWR is printed on the Certification Label on the driver’s door jamb, along with the axle ratings and model code.

5. Does the Tundra SR have a lower GCWR?

Yes. Toyota’s 2022 Tundra manual lists SR Package rows at 15,280–15,320 lb GCWR, roughly 2,000–2,450 lb below matching rows. Confirm on your label.

6. How is Tundra payload calculated?

Tundra payload is GVWR minus curb weight; the door-jamb label states the actual passenger-and-cargo limit for that specific truck.

7. Does tongue weight count against Tundra payload?

Yes. Toyota recommends 9–11% tongue weight, and that weight rides on the truck, shrinking the Tundra payload left for people and gear. Confirm on your door-jamb label.

8. Did the 2026 Tundra’s maximum payload change?

Yes. Toyota lists the 2026 Tundra’s maximum payload at 1,850 lb, down from 1,940 lb for 2025. Confirm your truck’s label.

9. Do I need a weight-distributing hitch on a Tundra?

Toyota’s 2025 Tundra manual requires a weight-distributing hitch when gross trailer weight exceeds 5,000 lb. Confirm your hitch receiver’s printed rating.

10. Are 2027 Tundra GVWR and GCWR figures published?

Not yet. Toyota revealed the 2027 Tundra in July 2026, but its towing and payload ratings weren’t published as of October 2026.

Match the trailer to the label, not the headline

Every Tundra weight rating belongs to a model year and a model code, not to the nameplate. Read GVWR and payload on the door jamb, GCWR and trailer rating in that year’s manual, then subtract tongue weight from what’s left. Size the trailer only after all three check out.
