Tundra Hybrid Towing Capacity and Payload by Trim, Cab and Drive

Tundra hybrid towing gets 437 hp, but horsepower doesn’t set the rating. Match the same 2026 truck with each engine and the real gap shows up in payload.

Does the Tundra hybrid tow more than the gas version?

The 2026 Tundra i-FORCE MAX hybrid tows up to 11,450 pounds in a two-wheel-drive Limited CrewMax with the 5.5-foot bed‡. Toyota’s 12,000-pound Tundra maximum belongs to a two-wheel-drive gas SR5‡, and the hybrid isn’t sold on the SR5.

Matched cab for cab and bed for bed, the two engines rate within about 130 pounds of each other‡. The hybrid doesn’t tow less. It carries less.

  • Choosing an engine on a Limited, Platinum or 1794 Edition? Start with the matched-pair table.
  • Sizing for a specific camper or boat? Go to payload and the worked trailer example.
  • Set on a TRD Pro or Capstone? Both are hybrid-only; their rows are in the table.

For bed lengths, axle ratios and the rest of the record, see every Tundra configuration’s specs.

ℹ️ Safety Note: Tow and payload ratings apply to a properly equipped truck in one specific configuration, and exceeding any of them affects braking and stability. Toyota’s own guidance is never to tow beyond a vehicle’s published towing capacities. Use the figures here to compare trucks, then verify against your truck’s labels and owner’s manual before hitching anything.

📍 Check your own vehicle first: Two Tundras with the same badge can be built differently. Confirm payload on the Tire and Loading Information placard in the driver door jamb, GVWR on the certification label on the door pillar, and trailer, tongue-weight and hitch limits in the owner’s manual towing section. If your truck disagrees with this page, your truck is right.

Why the hybrid’s extra torque doesn’t raise its tow rating

Tundra Hybrid extra torque versus tow rating explanation vector diagram
More torque makes the Tundra Hybrid pull more easily, but vehicle weight and safety limits determine the tow rating.

More torque makes towing feel easier, but it isn’t what sets the rating.

What the hybrid adds: 437 hp and 583 lb-ft

According to Toyota’s 2026 Tundra announcement, the gas i-FORCE twin-turbo V6 makes 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft. The i-FORCE MAX hybrid makes 437 net horsepower and 583 lb-ft, which is 104 lb-ft more torque.

What sets a tow rating instead

A tow rating reflects what the whole truck and trailer can do safely, and the truck’s own weight counts against it. The hybrid’s motor and battery add weight, which offsets much of the torque advantage. Toyota has said it rates its trucks to the SAE J2807 test standard since 2011, as stated in Toyota’s announcement on adopting SAE J2807.

🔍 What This Spec Means: Torque decides how hard the truck pulls. The tow rating decides how much it’s allowed to pull. Only the rating belongs in your trailer math.

Hybrid vs gas tow ratings in the same cab, bed and drive

Hybrid-only trims: TRD Pro and Capstone

The TRD Pro is rated at 11,175 pounds as a 4×4 CrewMax with the 5.5-foot bed‡. The Capstone is the lowest Tundra hybrid rating at 10,340 pounds in the same configuration‡.

Where the 12,000-lb gas rating comes from

Toyota lists 12,000 pounds as the 2026 Tundra maximum, achieved by a two-wheel-drive gas SR. For every configuration, see the full Tundra towing chart by trim or look up your exact configuration.

🚫 Fits But Shouldn’t: A dealer list showing “1794 gas 11,310 vs 1794 hybrid 11,020” can compare a 4×2 gas truck with a 4×4 hybrid‡. Check the drivetrain column before concluding the hybrid tows less.

Payload is where the hybrid gives ground

Payload is the hybrid’s real trade-off.

Why the number on your truck will differ

Toyota’s 2026 eBrochure notes that payload includes the weight of occupants, cargo and options. Payload is what’s left of the GVWR after the truck’s own weight, so heavier hardware leaves less. Every option on a specific truck lowers it further, which is why the door-jamb placard is the binding figure.

✅ Do This: Before signing, read the placard line “combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed” on the truck you’re buying. That number replaces any figure in this table.

What a heavy trailer leaves for people and cargo

Tongue weight is the trailer’s downward load on the hitch, and it comes out of payload.

A worked example at the hybrid’s max rating

Take a Limited i-FORCE MAX rated at 11,450 pounds with 1,680 pounds of payload‡. At 10 percent, tongue weight is 1,145 pounds, leaving 535 pounds for everyone and everything in the truck. At 15 percent, tongue weight is 1,718 pounds, which already exceeds that payload. Work out your truck’s remaining payload with your own placard numbers.

⚠️ Watch Out: A trailer within the tow rating can still overload the truck once tongue weight, passengers and cargo are added. If the math is tight, choose a lighter trailer or a truck with more payload; never adjust the numbers to fit.

✅ Do This: Ask the dealer or a qualified technician: “What tongue-weight limit applies to this truck’s factory receiver, with and without weight distribution, and what is the placard payload on this VIN?”

Which trims offer the hybrid, and when gas makes more sense

Engine choice depends on trim first.

Hybrid availability by trim

  • SR and SR5: gas only‡
  • Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition: hybrid optional‡
  • TRD Pro and Capstone: hybrid standard‡

A Class-IV hitch receiver with a 7-pin/4-pin connector is standard on every 2026 Tundra grade, including the SR, per Toyota.

Matching powertrain to the job

  • Highest tow rating: a two-wheel-drive gas SR5‡.
  • Most payload: gas SR or SR5‡.
  • Limited, Platinum or 1794: towing is nearly identical either way; the hybrid costs payload‡.
  • TRD Pro or Capstone: the hybrid is your only option, so check those rows.

To see what else changes between grades, compare Limited, Platinum and 1794 equipment.

Where to confirm the real numbers before you buy

Your truck’s labels outrank any article, including this one.

The labels that override any article

  1. Door-jamb placard: payload for that exact truck.
  2. Certification label: GVWR and axle ratings.
  3. Owner’s manual towing section: trailer weight, tongue-weight and hitch limits.
  4. Window sticker or build sheet: engine, drive, cab and bed, to find your row.

Why published lists disagree

Some dealer listings mix drivetrains or round figures. And according to Toyota’s 2027 Tundra announcement, full 2027 specifications were scheduled for fall 2026. Don’t assume 2026 ratings carry over.

Tundra hybrid towing and payload: quick answers

1. What is the Tundra hybrid towing capacity?

The 2026 Tundra hybrid towing capacity peaks at 11,450 pounds in a 4×2 Limited CrewMax 5.5-foot bed; Capstone is lowest at 10,340. Confirm in your owner’s manual.

2. Does the Tundra hybrid tow more than the gas?

Cab for cab, the Tundra hybrid rates equal or slightly higher. Gas holds the 12,000-pound top rating because the hybrid isn’t offered on the SR5.

3. Which Tundra tows 12,000 pounds?

Toyota’s 12,000-pound maximum belongs to a two-wheel-drive gas 2026 SR5; the hybrid tops out lower because it isn’t offered in that truck.

4. What is the Tundra hybrid payload?

Tundra hybrid payload ranges from 1,680 pounds on the Limited to 1,485 on the Capstone, versus 1,940 for the best gas SR/SR5. Check your door-jamb placard.

5. Why does the hybrid carry less payload?

Hybrid payload is lower because payload is what’s left of GVWR after the truck’s weight, and the hybrid motor and battery add weight.

6. Which trims offer the i-FORCE MAX hybrid?

The i-FORCE MAX hybrid is optional on Limited, Platinum and 1794 Edition, standard on TRD Pro and Capstone, and not offered on SR or SR5.

7. What is the Capstone towing capacity?

The 2026 Capstone towing capacity is 10,340 pounds as a hybrid 4×4 CrewMax with the 5.5-foot bed. Confirm in your owner’s manual.

8. What is the TRD Pro towing capacity?

The 2026 TRD Pro towing capacity is 11,175 pounds as a hybrid 4×4 CrewMax with the 5.5-foot bed. Confirm in your owner’s manual.

9. Does the hybrid’s extra torque raise towing ratings?

The hybrid adds 104 lb-ft of torque, but its added weight offsets the gain, so towing ratings stay close to gas.

10. Where do I find my Tundra’s real payload?

Your Tundra’s real payload is printed on the Tire and Loading Information placard in the driver door jamb, and it overrides any brochure figure.

The short version

In matching configurations, the 2026 Tundra hybrid tows as much as the gas truck or slightly more. The gas engine keeps the 12,000-pound top rating and the most payload. The hybrid’s cost is payload, and that matters most with a heavy trailer. Run your own numbers in the payload calculator, then confirm them on the door-jamb placard before you buy.
