Confirmed Top Tow Ratings for a 4×4 vs 4×2 3.5L F-150 by Year

Table of Contents
Does a 4×4 F-150 tow more? The answer changed in 2024
It depends on the model year. In Ford’s 2021–2023 guides, the top F-150 tow rating of 14,000 lbs belongs to 4×2 trucks. From 2024 the top rating is 13,500 lbs, and Ford’s 2024 guide puts it on a 4×4.
Start with your situation:
- Checking a used 2021–2023 listing: the 14,000-lb figure is 4×2-only; start with the year-by-year table.
- Speccing a new truck: see which builds come in both drivetrains.
- Sizing for a trailer: read payload and the final checks.
2021–2023: Ford’s top rating was a 4×2
The 14,000-lb rating requires the 3.5L EcoBoost, the Max Trailer Tow Package, and a SuperCab 8′ box 4×2 or SuperCrew 4×2. Ford’s footnote names no 4×4 at that figure.
2024–2026: the top rating moved to a 4×4
Ford’s 2024 guide ties 13,500 lbs to a SuperCrew 6.5′ box 4×4 with the 3.5L, Tow/Haul Package and Max Tow Axle. The 2025 and 2026 guides repeat it in the same row. Our F-150 specs by configuration covers every engine and cab.
ℹ️ Safety Note: Tow ratings apply only to the exact build Ford publishes them for, and exceeding one affects braking and stability, not just performance. Use the figures here for comparison, then verify against Ford’s towing guide for your model year and your truck’s door-jamb label before hitching a trailer.
📍 Check your own vehicle first: Specifications vary by build date, package and market, and two trucks with the same badge can be built differently. Before you buy anything based on this page, confirm the axle code and GVWR on the Safety Compliance Certification Label (driver door latch pillar), payload on the tire and loading placard, and package codes on the window sticker or build sheet. If your vehicle disagrees with this page, your vehicle is right.
Why 4×4 hardware usually trims the tow rating
Ford caps the combined weight of truck and trailer, so weight added to the truck comes off the trailer.

GCWR is the ceiling, and the truck’s weight comes out of it
GCWR (gross combined weight rating) is the most a loaded truck and loaded trailer may weigh together. Ford rates to SAE J2807, assuming a 150-lb driver and passenger aboard.
Same GCWR, heavier truck, lighter trailer
A 4×4 carries front-drive hardware that a 4×2 doesn’t. When both sit under the same GCWR, the heavier truck leaves less room for the trailer.
Trim and options take a share too
Ford notes that a truck’s tow capability can drop with the weight of its trim series and options. The chart figure is a ceiling for the build, not a promise for every truck.
🔍 What This Spec Means: A tow rating is subtraction. Start from GCWR, take away the truck and everyone in it, and what’s left is the trailer.
✅ Do This: Ask the dealer for the GCWR on the towing-guide row that matches the VIN, not the engine’s maximum. That number is the ceiling your trailer has to fit under.
Which drivetrain holds the top F-150 tow rating, 2021–2026

Ford’s own guides answer this year by year, and the drivetrain flips between 2023 and 2024.
| Model year | Top rating | Applies To | What It Includes | Ford source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021 | 14,000 lbs | 3.5L EcoBoost; SuperCab 8′ box 4×2 or SuperCrew 4×2 | Max Trailer Tow Package (53C) | 2021 RV & Trailer Towing Guide |
| 2022 | 14,000 lbs | Same as 2021 | Same as 2021 | 2022 RV & Trailer Towing Guide |
| 2023 | 14,000 lbs | Same as 2021 | Same as 2021 | 2023 RV & Trailer Towing Guide |
| 2024 | 13,500 lbs | 3.5L EcoBoost; SuperCrew 6.5′ box 4×4 | Tow/Haul Package (53T) + Max Tow Axle | 2024 F-150 Towing Guide |
| 2025 | 13,500 lbs | 3.5L EcoBoost; same 19,400-lb GCWR row as 2024 | 53T + Max Tow Axle | 2025 F-150 Towing Guide |
| 2026 | 13,500 lbs | 3.5L EcoBoost; same 19,400-lb GCWR row as 2024 | 53T + Max Tow Axle | 2026 F-150 Towing Guide |
Conventional towing, maximum loaded trailer weight. Ford names the configuration in its 2021–2024 footnotes; the 2025 and 2026 guides list 13,500 lbs in the same 19,400-lb GCWR row as 2024.
2021–2023 top-rated builds
Ford’s 2021–2023 guides repeat one footnote for 14,000 lbs, naming only 4×2 builds with the Max Trailer Tow Package, code 53C on the build sheet. Ford’s 2023 towing guide shows it.
2024–2026 top-rated build
The top rating dropped to 13,500 lbs and moved to a 4×4 in Ford’s 2024 F-150 towing guide. Reaching it takes the Tow/Haul Package (53T) and the optional Max Tow Axle, not just the engine.
What changed in Ford’s charts in 2024
From 2024, Ford’s conventional charts list the SuperCab only on a 145.4-inch wheelbase, and the 4×2 SuperCrew only on 145.4 inches. The longer 157.2-inch SuperCrew appears as a 4×4 only. Ford doesn’t say why.
📐 On the Spec Sheet: Ford’s 2024, 2025 and 2026 F-150 conventional towing charts use the same SuperCrew columns: 4×2 at 145.4 inches, and 4×4 at 145.4 and 157.2 inches.
✅ Do This: If a 2021–2023 listing says “tows 14,000,” ask for the build sheet and confirm 4×2, the 3.5L EcoBoost, a SuperCab 8′ box or SuperCrew, and code 53C. A 4×4 from those years isn’t a build Ford rates at that figure.
Where you can compare a 4×2 and 4×4 F-150 directly

A fair comparison needs the same year, engine, axle, cab, wheelbase and package, and Ford lists only some builds both ways.
| Cab and wheelbase | 4×2 listed | 4×4 listed | Applies To |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular Cab, 122.8 in | Yes | Yes | 5.0L V8 chart, 2024–2026 |
| Regular Cab, 141.5 in | Yes | Yes | Gas charts, 2024–2026 |
| SuperCab, 145.4 in | Yes | Yes | Gas charts, 2024–2026 |
| SuperCrew, 145.4 in | Yes | Yes | Gas charts, 2024–2026 |
| SuperCrew, 157.2 in | No | Yes | Gas charts, 2024–2026 |
| SuperCrew hybrid, 145.4 and 157.2 in | 2026 only | Yes | Hybrid charts; 4×2 footnoted “available spring 2026” |
Column headers from Ford’s 2024, 2025 and 2026 F-150 towing charts (conventional towing).
Read both columns in the same chart
Ford gives each cab-and-drivetrain column its own GCWR, so a 4×2 and 4×4 of the same cab can sit on different rows. Compare the figures for your axle ratio and package, not the headline.
Where only a 4×4 is listed
If you want the 157.2-inch gas SuperCrew, Ford’s 2024–2026 charts give you no 4×2 to compare against. Wheelbase and drivetrain become one decision there, not two.
What sets the gap in your row
The gap between columns comes from each column’s GCWR and the truck’s weight. Our F-150 towing capacity by engine chart has each engine’s figures; confirm your row in the 2026 F-150 towing guide.
✅ Do This: Ask the dealer to print both the 4×2 and 4×4 rows for your cab, wheelbase, axle ratio and package from the current towing guide. Compare the maximum loaded trailer weight in each, side by side.
F-150 builds where you can’t compare 4×2 and 4×4
Some F-150s come in one drivetrain only, so the comparison never applies.
Lightning and the 2024–2025 hybrid
Ford’s 2024 and 2025 charts list the Lightning and the hybrid as SuperCrew 4×4 only, as the hybrid page of Ford’s 2025 F-150 towing guide shows.
The 2026 hybrid adds a 4×2
Ford’s 2026 guide, revised March 2026, adds 4×2 SuperCrew hybrid columns and footnotes them as available from spring 2026. Read both columns on that chart before comparing one with a 4×4 hybrid.
Fifth-wheel ratings run on their own chart
Fifth-wheel and gooseneck ratings sit on a separate Ford chart and assume a king-pin load of 15% of the trailer’s loaded weight.
🚫 Fits But Shouldn’t: A 5.5-foot box F-150 accepts a fifth-wheel hitch, but Ford says most fifth-wheel trailer designs aren’t compatible with it. The limit is cab clearance with the short box, not the hitch rating.
✅ Do This: Before buying a fifth-wheel setup for a 5.5-foot box, ask the hitch installer to confirm in writing the cab-to-trailer clearance for your specific trailer in a full turn.
The tow rating isn’t your only limit: payload and tongue weight
A trailer inside the tow rating can still overload the truck pulling it.
Tongue weight comes out of payload
Ford sets conventional tongue weight at 10% of the loaded trailer’s weight, so a 9,000-lb trailer puts about 900 lbs on the truck. That load, plus passengers and cargo, must fit within payload, rear GAWR and GVWR.
Where Ford specs its max payload
Ford footnotes the 5.0L’s maximum payload to a SuperCrew 4×2 with the Tow/Haul Package and Max Tow Axle: 2,230 lbs in 2024, 2,225 lbs in 2025 and 2026. That’s one build’s ceiling, not proof that every 4×2 carries more. Your truck’s own figure is on its tire and loading placard.
⚠️ Watch Out: Tongue weight never shows up in the tow rating, so it’s the load buyers forget. Read the payload on the placard of the actual truck, after any dealer-added accessories, before comparing it with your trailer.
✅ Do This: Ask the dealer for the placard payload of the specific VIN you’re buying, not a brochure maximum, and subtract 10% of your loaded trailer weight from it.
Check these before you trust any F-150 tow number
These three checks tell you which chart row is yours.
Read the axle code on the door label
Ford prints the axle code on the Safety Compliance Certification Label, on the left front door lock facing or latch pillar: the word AXLE, then a two-digit code. On 2024–2026 trucks, a 3.55 axle reads 19 (open) or L9 (electronic-locking).
Confirm the Tow/Haul Package and Max Tow Axle
On 2024–2026 gas trucks, trailers over 11,600 lbs need the Tow/Haul Package (53T), and the top ratings also need the Max Tow Axle. The hybrid’s threshold is 10,800 lbs (2025–2026 guides), and towing without required equipment may void the warranty.
Hitch limits that cap you first
Above 5,000 lbs, Ford requires weight distribution. The receiver’s weight-distributing maximum is 13,500 lbs, with a 1,350-lb tongue limit (2024–2025) or 1,400 lbs (2026).
✅ Do This: Before you sign, ask the dealer to show in writing the towing-guide row for the VIN: axle code, GCWR, maximum loaded trailer weight, and whether 53T and the Max Tow Axle are on the build.
F-150 4×2 vs 4×4 towing: common questions
1. Does 4WD reduce F-150 towing capacity?
Usually, in the same build: 4WD hardware adds truck weight under the same GCWR. But Ford’s 2024 top tow rating belongs to a 4×4. Check your VIN’s row.
2. Which F-150 tows 14,000 lbs?
14,000 lbs applies to 2021–2023 F-150s with the 3.5L EcoBoost, Max Trailer Tow Package, and a SuperCab 8′ box or SuperCrew, both 4×2. Check the build sheet for 53C.
3. Which F-150 tows 13,500 lbs?
Ford’s 2024 guide ties 13,500 lbs to a 3.5L EcoBoost SuperCrew 6.5′ box 4×4 with Tow/Haul Package and Max Tow Axle. Confirm both on the window sticker.
4. Why did the F-150’s top tow rating move to a 4×4?
Ford doesn’t say why the top tow rating moved. From 2024, its charts list no 4×2 SuperCrew on the 157.2-inch wheelbase.
5. Is the F-150 hybrid available as a 4×2?
Ford’s 2024–2025 charts list the F-150 hybrid as SuperCrew 4×4 only; the 2026 guide adds 4×2 SuperCrew columns from spring 2026.
6. Do I need the Max Tow Axle to tow over 11,600 lbs?
On 2024–2026 gas F-150s, trailers over 11,600 lbs need the Tow/Haul Package, and the top ratings also need the Max Tow Axle. Check the window sticker.
7. Where is the axle ratio on an F-150?
The axle ratio is the two-digit code after AXLE on the Safety Compliance Certification Label, on the left front door lock facing or latch pillar.
8. Does a 4×2 F-150 have more payload?
Ford footnotes the 5.0L’s maximum payload to a SuperCrew 4×2, but that’s one build. Your F-150’s payload is on its tire and loading placard.
9. Can a 5.5-foot bed F-150 tow a fifth wheel?
A 5.5-foot box F-150 accepts a fifth-wheel hitch, but Ford says most fifth-wheel trailer designs aren’t compatible with it. Confirm clearance with your hitch installer.
10. Does trim level change F-150 towing capacity?
Yes. Ford says a specific F-150’s towing capacity can drop with the weight of its trim series and option content. Check your door label.
Before you choose a drivetrain
Ford’s 14,000 lbs was 4×2-only, and its 13,500 lbs, per the 2024 guide, needs a 4×4 SuperCrew with the Tow/Haul Package and Max Tow Axle. Match your axle code, cab, wheelbase and package codes to Ford’s chart for that model year before you buy.
