The Right Load Rating for F150 Wheels on a Lightning

Will gas F-150 wheels work on a Lightning?

A gas F-150 wheel can bolt onto a 2022–2025 F-150 Lightning, but bolting on is not the test. The test is whether the wheel’s stamped load rating covers the Lightning’s axle ratings. Before launch, Ford’s Lightning marketing manager said the truck’s wheels were specific to its weight and not shared with the gas F-150.

If you’re reusing a winter set

Go to the three-number check in Section 5. Your wheels and your tires each have to pass it.

If you’re buying a used Lightning

Ford ended Lightning production in December 2025, so every Lightning is now a used purchase, and some are sold on swapped wheels. Section 7 covers what to check. For every other figure, see our F-150 specs by configuration.

ℹ️ Safety Note: Wheels and tires carry the truck’s full load, so an under-rated one is a load-bearing failure risk, not a cosmetic mismatch. The figures here are for comparison only. Never fit a wheel or tire rated below your truck’s label, and have a qualified tire professional confirm the ratings before driving loaded.

📍 Check your own vehicle first: Specifications vary by build date, package and market, and two trucks with the same badge can be built differently. Before you buy anything based on this page, confirm against the Safety Compliance Certification label and the Tire and Loading Information placard on the driver’s door jamb, plus the load stamp on the back of each wheel. If your vehicle disagrees with this page, your vehicle is right.

What matches: bolt pattern, hub bore and lug thread

Lightning wheel diagram showing the 6x135 bolt pattern, 87.1 mm hub bore and M14x1.5 lug thread
Bolt pattern, hub bore and lug thread determine whether a wheel can mount, but they do not prove its strength.

Three dimensions decide whether a wheel mounts, and none of them says anything about strength.

6×135 and 87.1 mm hub bore

Gas F-150s and the Lightning are both listed with a 6×135 bolt pattern and an 87.1 mm hub bore. After that, offset and width decide whether the wheel clears the suspension and fenders.

Lug thread: why older hardware is different

Ford Performance lists its F-150 lug nut kit for 2015–2023 trucks with an M14x1.5 thread. Lug nuts from pre-2015 trucks are reported to use a different thread. Our F-150 lug nut size and thread pitch guide covers each generation.

Why a Lightning asks more of every wheel

Lightning battery-weight illustration showing how battery mass and cargo affect front and rear axle ratings
The Lightning’s battery and payload affect axle loading, so replacement wheels must be checked against both axle ratings.

The Lightning’s battery shows up in its axle ratings, and axle ratings are what a wheel has to match.

Battery weight and axle ratings

For 2025, Ford fits a 98 kWh battery to Pro and XLT, 123 kWh to Flash, and 131 kWh to Lariat and Platinum. Each gross axle weight rating (GAWR) on your door-jamb label is the most that axle may carry, including the truck itself.

Why the rear axle often sets the number

Cargo and hitch weight load the rear axle, and on that 2025 Pro listing the rear figure is the higher one. Check both, because the wheel has to satisfy whichever is heavier on your label. Our F-150 payload capacity chart shows how payload shifts across gas configurations.

Lightning trims, factory wheels and axle ratings, 2022–2025

Ford’s 2025 specifications tie each Lightning trim to one factory wheel diameter and one battery. Those are the rows below.

📐 On the Spec Sheet: Ford’s 2025 F-150 Lightning Technical Specifications list 18-inch high-gloss black painted alloys on Pro and XLT, 20-inch Dark Carbonized Gray alloys on Flash and Lariat, and 22-inch bright machined alloys with Ebony Black pockets on Platinum.

2022–2024 differences

Earlier model years used a different trim and battery mix. Until those rows are added, owners of 2022–2024 trucks should rely on their own door-jamb label.

The three-number check before you mount anything

A replacement wheel needs a stamped load rating of at least half the heavier GAWR on your door-jamb label. Three numbers settle it.

Find the heavier GAWR

Read front and rear GAWR from the Safety Compliance Certification label on the driver’s door jamb. Take the higher of the two.

Compare with margin

Divide the heavier GAWR by two; the stamp must equal or exceed that figure. Wheel-industry guidance ties this half-GAWR rule to SAE J2530, the aftermarket wheel test standard.

✅ Do This: Photograph your door-jamb label and the back of every wheel in the set. Then ask a tire shop one question: “Does the stamped max load on each of these wheels equal or exceed half my heavier GAWR?”

The tires on a gas-truck set may not match your placard

Your wheels can pass the check and the tires mounted on them can still fall short.

Load index versus placard

The Tire and Loading Information placard on your door jamb lists the Lightning’s factory tire size and load index. A gas F-150 winter set was sized to that truck’s placard, not yours. Compare the load index molded on each sidewall to your Lightning’s placard, and never go below it.

P-metric versus LT tires

P-metric and LT tires are rated on different load tables, so two tires of the same size can carry different loads. Compare the load figure molded on each tire’s sidewall, not the size.

⚠️ Watch Out: A tire below your placard’s load index is under-rated whenever the truck is loaded to its ratings. Match or exceed the placard before the set goes on, and confirm with the tire shop that mounts it.

Five swaps that bolt on but shouldn’t go on

Each of these mounts without complaint and still fails a specification.

  • A gas wheel stamped too low: it fails if its stamp is below half your heavier GAWR.
  • Pre-2015 lug nuts: the thread may not match.
  • A winter set on the wrong tires: it fails if the tire load index is below your placard.

The same load-rating logic applies to Raptor wheels on a regular F-150.

17-inch gas wheels

Ford’s 2025 specifications list no Lightning wheel smaller than 18 inches. Brake clearance for 17-inch wheels isn’t documented by Ford, so treat them as unsupported.

Used Lightnings on swapped wheels

Check every wheel’s load stamp and part number before you pay, not after.

🚫 Fits But Shouldn’t: A gas F-150 wheel with the right bolt pattern, hub bore and thread will mount on a Lightning. If its stamped max load is below half your truck’s heavier GAWR, it is under-rated for that truck. The stamp and the door label are what settle it.

FAQ

1. Will gas F150 wheels fit a Lightning?

They can bolt on, but each gas F150 wheel must be stamped for at least half the Lightning’s heavier GAWR. Confirm on your door-jamb label.

2. Is the Lightning bolt pattern the same as a gas F150?

Both are listed as 6×135, pending Ford confirmation, but a matching bolt pattern proves mounting, not load capacity. Confirm on the wheel stamp.

3. What load rating do Lightning wheels need?

Lightning wheels need a stamped rating of at least half the heavier front or rear GAWR on the door-jamb label. Confirm on your label.

4. Where is the load rating on a wheel?

A wheel’s load rating is usually stamped on the inner barrel or back of a spoke; an unstamped wheel counts as unrated. Check every wheel.

5. Where do I find my Lightning’s GAWR?

Your Lightning’s front and rear GAWR are printed on the Safety Compliance Certification label on the driver’s door jamb.

6. Can I use my old F150 winter wheels on a Lightning?

Only if every F150 winter wheel’s stamp covers half your heavier GAWR and the tires meet your placard’s load index.

7. Do 17-inch F150 wheels fit a Lightning?

Ford’s 2025 Lightning specifications list no factory wheel under 18 inches, so 17-inch F150 wheels are unsupported. Confirm clearance with a professional.

8. Do gas F150 lug nuts fit a Lightning?

Ford Performance lists 2015–2023 F150 lug nuts at M14x1.5, pending Lightning confirmation; older hardware may differ. Check the thread before mounting.

9. Do gas F150 tires have enough load index for a Lightning?

Not necessarily; compare each tire’s sidewall load index to your Lightning’s door-jamb placard and never go below it.

10. What should I check on a used Lightning’s wheels?

Check each wheel’s load stamp and part number against half the used Lightning’s heavier GAWR before paying. Confirm on the door-jamb label.

Before you buy or bolt on

For a Lightning, bolt pattern and thread are only the entry ticket. The three numbers that decide it are the heavier GAWR on your door jamb, half of it, and the load stamp on every wheel, plus a tire load index that meets your placard. Photograph all three before you spend money, and let a tire professional confirm the match.
