Documented F-150 Payload Capacity by Engine, Drivetrain and Cab

Table of Contents
How much can an F-150 carry? It depends on four things
For 2026, Ford’s highest published payload capacity is 2,440 lbs, on a 3.5L EcoBoost 4×2 when properly equipped. The same engine as a 4×4 tops out at 2,175 lbs. Neither is likely to be the number on the truck you’re looking at.
The number Ford advertises
Ford says maximum payload, towing, horsepower and torque are independent ratings that may not all be reached on one truck. It directs buyers to the doorjamb label for a specific vehicle’s capacity. Four things move that label: model year, engine, drivetrain, and the cab, box and GVWR the truck was built to.
Which section answers your question
- Shopping a new 2024–2026 truck: start with the engine table.
- Checking a used 2021: go to the cab-and-GVWR matrix.
- Sizing for a trailer or camper: read the payload traps, then where to verify.
- Choosing 4×2 or 4×4: see the drivetrain comparison.
Tow ratings, hitch limits and wheel specs for each build are in our F-150 specs by configuration guide.
ℹ️ Safety Note: Payload is a load rating. Exceeding GVWR or rear GAWR affects braking and stability, not just ride height. The figures on this page are Ford’s published maximums for comparison. Confirm the payload for your VIN on the door-jamb label before loading or hitching anything.
📍 Check your own vehicle first: Specifications vary by build date, package and market, and two trucks with the same badge can be built differently. Before you buy anything based on this page, confirm against the door-jamb label, the Safety Compliance Certification Label (GVWR, GAWR, axle code), and the window sticker or VIN build sheet. If your vehicle disagrees with this page, your vehicle is right.
What F-150 payload actually includes
F-150 payload is the weight one specific truck can carry without exceeding its GVWR: passengers, cargo, accessories added after the factory, and a trailer’s tongue load. It’s GVWR minus that truck’s curb weight, so two trucks with the same engine can carry different amounts.

GVWR minus curb weight
Ford’s towing guides say payload, reduced by option weight, must cover tongue load, passengers and cargo. The total can’t push the truck past GVWR or rear GAWR, and both ratings are printed on the Safety Compliance Certification Label.
🔍 What This Spec Means: A heavier trim or an accessory bolted on after purchase uses up payload before you load anything. Ford states that maximum payload varies with configuration, accessories and option content.
Why max payload and max towing are different trucks
Ford lists maximum payload and maximum towing as independent attributes. They come from different builds, so a truck ordered for one isn’t automatically rated for the other.
F-150 max payload by engine and 4×2 vs 4×4, 2024–2026
Ford’s 2026 technical specifications list each engine’s maximum payload separately for 4×2 and 4×4. The top figures run from 1,405 lbs (Raptor) to 2,440 lbs (3.5L EcoBoost 4×2).

We show the lower figure until Ford’s documents agree.
Ford’s maximums shift by 5–10 lbs between years. That’s why “2,445” is a 2024 figure, not a 2026 one.
📐 On the Spec Sheet: Ford’s 2025 towing guide ties the 5.0L V8’s 2,225-lb maximum to a SuperCrew 4×2 with the Tow/Haul Package and Max Tow Axle upgrade.
🚫 Fits But Shouldn’t: The 2026 PowerBoost’s 2,045-lb figure is a 4×2 rating. A 4×4 hybrid’s ceiling on the same sheet is 1,740 lbs, and Ford’s 2025 selector lists the hybrid only as a 4×4 SuperCrew.
To pair these ceilings with trailer ratings, see our F-150 towing capacity by engine chart.
2021 F-150 payload by cab, bed and GVWR
Ford’s 2021 technical specifications publish payload for every cab, wheelbase, drivetrain and GVWR, which is the detail used listings leave out.

Heavy-Duty Payload Package trucks (7,850 GVWR)
| Cab & Box (Wheelbase) | Engine | 4×2 (lbs) | 4×4 (lbs) | Applies To (GVWR) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regular Cab 8-ft (141.5″) | 5.0L V8 | 3,325 | 3,050 | 2021, 7,850, HDPP |
| Regular Cab 8-ft (141.5″) | 3.5L EcoBoost | 3,250 | 3,035 | 2021, 7,850, HDPP |
| SuperCab 8-ft (164.1″) | 5.0L V8 | 3,010 | 2,765 | 2021, 7,850, HDPP |
| SuperCrew 6.5-ft (157.2″) | 5.0L V8 | 2,900 | 2,650 | 2021, 7,850, HDPP |
| SuperCrew 5.5-ft (145.4″) | PowerBoost | 2,090 | 1,830 | 2021, 7,350, no HDPP |
Source: Ford 2021 F-150 Technical Specifications, maximum payload by cab, wheelbase, drivetrain and GVWR. Box lengths are matched to wheelbases from the same document.
🚫 Fits But Shouldn’t: A 2021 Regular Cab 8-ft 5.0L looks like the 3,325-lb truck. Without the Heavy-Duty Payload Package (code 627), Ford lists that configuration at 2,350 lbs (4×2, 6,750 GVWR) or 2,300 lbs (4×4, 6,950 GVWR). The package code on the build sheet settles it.
What about 2022 and 2023?
Ford’s 2023 guide lists 3,315 lbs for the same Regular Cab 8-ft 5.0L configuration. We haven’t verified Ford’s 2022 figures, so we don’t publish them. Ford’s 2024 towing information shows no payload above 2,445 lbs, so don’t carry a 2021–2023 number over to a 2024+ truck.
Does 4×4 or a bigger cab cut F-150 payload?
Four-wheel drive lowers the maximum for every engine that Ford publishes in both drivetrains for 2026. The cab name matters less than the GVWR the truck was rated at.
The 4×4 difference by engine (2026)
Calculated from Ford’s 2026 figures, the 4×4 reduction is:
- 2.7L EcoBoost: 60 lbs
- 5.0L V8: 155 lbs
- 3.5L EcoBoost: 265 lbs
- PowerBoost hybrid: 305 lbs
Cab vs. GVWR tier (2021)
A 2021 5.0L 4×2 lists 2,350 lbs as a Regular Cab 8-ft, 2,345 as a SuperCab 6.5-ft, and 2,335 as a SuperCrew 5.5-ft. But Ford also lists that same SuperCrew at a lower 6,800-lb GVWR, rated 2,135 lbs, which is 200 lbs less with identical cab and engine. For how drivetrain changes trailer ratings too, see our F-150 4×4 vs 4×2 towing comparison.
Why your F-150’s payload is lower than the ad says
Three things spend payload before the truck ever reaches its published maximum.
Tongue load comes out of payload
Ford sets tongue load at 10% of a conventional trailer’s loaded weight and king-pin load at 15% for a 5th-wheel. Either load, plus passengers and cargo, must fit within payload after option weight, without exceeding GVWR or rear GAWR. A 9,000-lb trailer therefore uses about 900 lbs of payload before anyone gets in.
⚠️ Watch Out: A trailer inside the tow rating can still overload the truck. Ford’s weight-distributing receiver allows up to 1,350 lbs of tongue load (2024–2025) or 1,400 lbs (2026), and that comes off the door-label figure before passengers. Size the trailer to the label, not to the tow rating.
Max tow and max payload aren’t the same truck
For 2026, Ford’s 13,500-lb tow rating needs a 3.5L SuperCrew 4×4 with the Tow/Haul Package and Max Tow Axle. The 2,440-lb payload maximum is a 4×2 figure.
🚫 Fits But Shouldn’t: A buyer ordering the 13,500-lb 2026 build gets a 4×4 whose engine ceiling is 2,175 lbs, not 2,440, and that’s before trim content lowers it further.
✅ Do This: Ask the dealer to show three things for the exact VIN: the door-label payload, the rear GAWR, and the towing-selector row. Ford’s 2025 F-150 towing guide shows the selector format to compare against.
Where to find a specific F-150’s payload before you buy
Two labels on the driver’s side give the numbers, and the build sheet explains them:
- Door-jamb label: Ford’s stated source for a specific truck’s carrying capacity.
- Safety Compliance Certification Label: GVWR, GAWR and the axle code.
- Window sticker or build sheet: the package codes behind the rating.
The Tire and Loading Information label
Ford points buyers to the doorjamb label for the carrying capacity of a specific vehicle. That figure already reflects the truck’s own trim and factory options.
The Safety Compliance Certification Label and axle code
This label sits on the left front door lock facing or the door latch post pillar, and the AXLE code appears below the bar code. It also carries the GVWR and GAWR that payload can’t exceed.
✅ Do This: Photograph both labels on the lot, then run the figures through our payload and tongue weight calculator with your passengers, accessories and trailer.
F-150 payload capacity: common questions
1. What is the maximum F-150 payload capacity for 2026?
Ford lists 2,440 lbs for a 3.5L EcoBoost 4×2 and 2,175 lbs for a 4×4, when properly equipped. Check your door-jamb label.
2. Which F-150 engine has the highest payload capacity?
The 3.5L EcoBoost: 2,445 lbs in 2024 and 2,440 lbs in 2025–2026, as a 4×2. Confirm on your door label.
3. How much does 4×4 reduce F-150 payload capacity?
From Ford’s 2026 figures, 4×4 cuts the engine maximum by 60 lbs (2.7L) up to 305 lbs (PowerBoost). Check your label.
4. What was the 2021 F-150 payload with the Heavy-Duty Payload Package?
Up to 3,325 lbs, on a Regular Cab 8-ft 4×2 with the 5.0L V8 at 7,850 lbs GVWR. Verify code 627 on the build sheet.
5. Why is my F-150’s payload capacity lower than advertised?
Advertised figures are engine maximums for one properly equipped build. Drivetrain, GVWR tier, trim and accessories lower yours. Your door label shows it.
6. Does tongue weight count against F-150 payload capacity?
Yes. Ford says tongue load, about 10% of the loaded trailer, must fit within payload alongside passengers and cargo. Check your label.
7. Where is the F-150 payload sticker?
On the driver’s door jamb. GVWR and rear GAWR are on the Safety Compliance Certification Label at the door lock facing or latch pillar.
8. Can one F-150 have max payload and max towing capacity?
No. Ford calls them independent attributes; the 2026 top tow rating is a SuperCrew 4×4, and the top payload is 4×2.
9. What is the F-150 PowerBoost payload capacity?
For 2026, 2,045 lbs as a 4×2 and 1,740 lbs as a 4×4. Ford listed 1,755 lbs for 2024. Confirm on your label.
10. Did F-150 payload capacity drop after 2023?
Ford’s published maximum went from 3,315 lbs (2023, Heavy-Duty Payload Package) to 2,445 lbs (2024). Ford’s documents don’t give a reason.
Before you buy: read the label, not the brochure
Every figure on this page is a ceiling for one properly equipped build. The payload that governs your purchase is printed on that truck’s door jamb, and it already reflects its drivetrain, GVWR and options. Read it, subtract passengers, accessories and tongue load, and buy the truck whose remaining margin still covers your load.
