Find the Right F-150 Towing Capacity by Engine, Axle and Cab

Table of Contents
How much can an F-150 tow? It depends on five choices
Ford rates a 2026 F-150 pickup anywhere from 7,400 to 13,500 lbs of trailer. That number belongs to one exact build, not to the badge on the tailgate.
Five choices set it: the engine, the axle ratio, the cab and box, 4×2 or 4×4, and the towing equipment fitted. This page narrows our full F-150 specs by configuration down to towing.
Start where your situation fits:
- Cross-shopping model years: go to the engine table, then the traps near the end.
- Sizing for a known trailer: read the axle matrix, then the payload and GCWR limits.
- Checking a truck on a lot: jump to reading its axle code.
ℹ️ Safety Note: Tow ratings apply only to the exact build Ford publishes them for, and exceeding one affects braking and stability, not just performance. Use the figures here for comparison. Confirm them against the towing guide for your model year and your truck’s own labels before hitching anything.
📍 Check your own vehicle first: Specifications vary by build date, package and market, and two trucks with the same badge can be built differently. Before you buy anything based on this page, confirm against:
- the Safety Compliance Certification Label on the driver’s door lock facing or latch pillar (axle code, GVWR, GAWR)
- the door-jamb label showing carrying capacity
- the rating label on the hitch receiver
- the window sticker or build sheet (package codes)
If your vehicle disagrees with this page, your vehicle is right.

📐 On the Spec Sheet: Ford’s 2026 F-150 Towing Guide, revised 03-10-26, lists the PowerBoost hybrid at 12,400 lbs with the Tow/Haul Package and Max Tow Axle. The same revision adds 4×2 hybrid columns marked “available spring 2026.”
Another Ford copy of the 2026 guide still online shows 11,600 lbs; check which revision a listing quotes.
What changed after 2023
The top rating fell from 14,000 to 13,500 lbs in 2024, and Ford’s guides don’t say why.
✅ Do This: Ask the seller for the model year and window-sticker package codes before trusting a listed tow figure.
Which axle ratio unlocks which rating (2026)

On a 2026 F-150, the axle ratio that carries the top rating depends on the engine.
| Engine | Axle ratio | GCWR (lbs) | Max trailer (lbs) | Applies To & What It Includes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3.5L EcoBoost | 3.31 or 3.55 | 16,200–17,700 | 10,500–11,000 | Standard rows; varies by cab, wheelbase, drivetrain |
| 3.5L EcoBoost | 3.55 | 19,300–19,400 | 13,100–13,500 | Requires Tow/Haul Package (53T) + Max Tow Axle |
| 3.5L EcoBoost | 3.73 | 17,100 | 10,600 | Tremor trim series only |
| 5.0L V8 | 3.15 or 3.31 | 14,800–14,900 | 9,100–9,600 | Standard rows |
| 5.0L V8 | 3.73 | 13,900–15,900 | 9,000–10,500 | Standard 3.73 rows |
| 5.0L V8 | 3.73 | 17,700–18,400 | 12,300–12,800 | Requires 53T + Max Tow Axle |
| PowerBoost hybrid | 3.55 or 3.73 | up to 18,400 | up to 12,400 | SuperCrew; top rows require 53T + Max Tow Axle |

3.5L EcoBoost: why 3.55, not 3.73, carries the max
Its top rows, at 19,300 and 19,400 lbs GCWR (the combined truck-and-trailer limit), sit under 3.55 and need 53T plus the Max Tow Axle. Its only 3.73 row is the Tremor’s, at 10,600 lbs, as in Ford’s 2024 selector.
5.0L V8 and 2.7L EcoBoost: 3.73 carries the max
Both peak only on 3.73: the 5.0L at 12,800 lbs with 53T and the Max Tow Axle, the 2.7L at 8,400 lbs.
Raptor and Raptor R: 4.10 only
Each lists a single 4.10 ratio, at 8,200 and 8,700 lbs. Find your row with our [F-150 towing capacity lookup](INTERNAL: Towing Capacity Lookup) or in Ford’s revised 2026 F-150 towing guide.
✅ Do This: Ask the dealer for the selector row matching the truck’s VIN, with its axle ratio and GCWR.
Cab, box and 4×4: why the same engine tows less
Within one axle row, Ford rates each cab, wheelbase and 4×2 or 4×4 drivetrain separately.
Where 13,500 lives: SuperCrew, 6.5-ft box, 4×4
📐 On the Spec Sheet: Ford’s 2024 F-150 towing guide puts its 13,500-lb maximum on a SuperCrew 6.5-foot box 4×4 with the 3.5L V6, requiring the Tow/Haul Package and optional Max Tow Axle.
The 2026 guide keeps 13,500 lbs without restating the build in words.
2021 logic vs 2024+ logic: 4×2 used to top the chart
Ford’s 2021 maximum belonged to a SuperCab 8-foot 4×2 or SuperCrew 4×2. From 2024, the top gas rating is a 4×4.
⚠️ Watch Out: The 2026 hybrid adds 4×2 columns, available from spring 2026. Confirm which one carries 12,400 lbs before assuming a 4×4 does.
✅ Do This: Match the cab, box, wheelbase and drivetrain on the window sticker to the selector column.
The packages and hitch you need for the top ratings

Above 11,600 lbs, a 2024–2026 gas F-150 needs specific factory equipment.
Tow/Haul Package (53T) and the Max Tow Axle
Ford requires the Tow/Haul Package (53T) for those trailers, plus the optional Max Tow Axle for the maximum; the hybrid’s 2026 threshold is 10,800 lbs. Ford warns the warranty may be voided if you tow without required equipment.
2021–2023 trucks used the Max Trailer Tow Package (53C) instead; see [how 53C differs from 53T and the Max Tow Axle](INTERNAL: Package explainer cluster).
Hitch receiver ratings and the 5,000-lb rule
| Limit | 2024–2025 | 2026 | Applies To & What It Includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard 2″ receiver | 11,600 lbs | 11,600 lbs | Standard on F-150 pickup |
| Reinforced 2″ receiver | 14,000 lbs | 14,000 lbs | In 53T (2024); in Max Tow Axle (2025–2026) |
| Weight-carrying max (trailer / tongue) | 5,000 / 500 lbs | 5,000 / 500 lbs | Without weight distribution |
| Weight-distributing max (trailer / tongue) | 13,500 / 1,350 lbs | 13,500 / 1,400 lbs | 2026 figure requires 53T + Max Tow Axle |
Sources: Ford 2024 and 2026 F-150 Towing Guides; 2025 figures from Ford’s 2025 guide as cited on our parent pillar.
Ford says not to exceed 5,000 lbs without a weight-distribution system.
🚫 Fits But Shouldn’t: A 2-inch ball mount slides into the standard receiver, which is rated 11,600 lbs. A factory label reading 11,600 means the truck lacks the reinforced 14,000-lb receiver that comes with top-rating equipment.
✅ Do This: Ask the seller to photograph the receiver label and package codes first.
When payload or GCWR limits you before the tow rating
A trailer inside the tow rating can still overload the truck through tongue weight on its payload.
Tongue weight counts against payload
Ford’s ratings assume a 150-lb driver and passenger and no cargo. Tongue weight should be 10% of loaded trailer weight (15% king-pin for a 5th-wheel), within the truck’s GVWR and rear GAWR.
GCWR, altitude and trailer frontal area
Truck plus trailer can’t exceed the row’s GCWR, defined on Ford’s towing guides page. Ford says to cut GVW and GCW by 2% per 1,000 feet of elevation. On 2024–2026 trucks, trailer frontal area is capped at 55 sq ft for ratings to 7,700 lbs and 65 sq ft above.
✅ Do This: Weigh the loaded rig on a public scale against the door-label GVWR, rear GAWR and row GCWR.
Read the axle code and avoid these towing traps
Your axle ratio is printed on the truck, and it points you to the right row.
Decode the AXLE code on the door pillar
- Find the Safety Compliance Certification Label on the driver’s door lock facing or latch pillar.
- Read the code after the word AXLE, below the bar code.
- Match it below, then find that ratio in your year’s selector.
| Axle ratio | Open diff code | E-locking code | Applies To |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.15 | 15 | Not available | 2024–2026 F-150 pickup |
| 3.31 | 27 | L3 | 2024–2026 |
| 3.55 | 19 | L9 | 2024–2026 |
| 3.73 | 26 (2024 only) | L6 | 2025–2026 list open 3.73 as not available |
| 4.10 | Not available | L4 | Raptor and Raptor R rows |

Five traps that inflate a used F-150’s tow rating
- Wrong year: 14,000 lbs is 2021–2023 only; 2024–2026 tops out at 13,500.
- “Tow package” in the ad: look for 53T plus the Max Tow Axle.
- 3.73 on a 3.5L EcoBoost: that’s the Tremor row, not max tow.
- Old hybrid figures: use the 03-10-26 revision and its drivetrain column.
- Code L9 alone: proves a 3.55 locking axle, not the Max Tow Axle.
✅ Do This: Ask the dealer to confirm in writing which selector row your door label matches.
F-150 towing capacity: common questions
1.What is the max towing capacity of a 2026 F-150?
2026 F-150 towing capacity tops out at 13,500 lbs, on a 3.5L EcoBoost with the Tow/Haul Package and Max Tow Axle. Confirm your truck’s selector row.
2. Which F-150 engine tows the most?
The 3.5L EcoBoost is the F-150 engine that tows the most: 14,000 lbs through 2023, then 13,500 lbs.
3. What axle ratio gives the 3.5L EcoBoost its max rating?
The 3.5L EcoBoost’s top rating rows sit under the 3.55 axle in Ford’s 2024 and 2026 selectors, with the Max Tow Axle. Check your AXLE code.
4. Is 3.73 better than 3.55 for F-150 towing?
It depends on engine: the F-150 5.0L V8 and 2.7L EcoBoost peak on 3.73; the 3.5L EcoBoost peaks on 3.55.
5. How do I find my F-150’s axle ratio?
Read the AXLE code below the bar code on the driver’s door-pillar label, then match it to Ford’s code chart for that year.
6. Does 4×4 reduce F-150 towing capacity?
Not always: Ford’s 2021 maximum was a 4×2, but its 2024 maximum towing capacity is a SuperCrew 6.5-foot 4×4. Confirm your drivetrain’s column.
7. How much can a 5.0 V8 F-150 tow?
A 5.0L V8 F-150 tows up to 13,000 lbs (2021, 2023), 12,900 (2024–2025) and 12,800 (2026). Confirm your row.
8. How much can the F-150 PowerBoost hybrid tow?
The PowerBoost hybrid tows 12,700 lbs (2021, 2023), 11,200 (2024–2025) and 12,400 in Ford’s revised 2026 guide. Confirm the drivetrain column.
9. Can an F-150 tow over 5,000 lbs without weight distribution?
No. Ford caps F-150 towing without a weight-distribution system at 5,000 lbs, with a 500-lb tongue. Check your receiver label.
10. Is the F-150 Max Trailer Tow Package still offered?
Not by that name: 2021–2023 used the Max Trailer Tow Package (53C); 2024 onward uses Tow/Haul (53T) plus Max Tow Axle.
Before you buy: find your truck’s row
Match the model year, engine, axle code, cab, box, drivetrain and package codes to that year’s Ford selector row. Then check the row’s GCWR, your door-label payload and the receiver label against your loaded trailer. If the truck disagrees with this page, the truck is right.
