Every 2025 F-150 Axle Ratio Code, With the Exact Max Tow Pair

F-150 axle code comparison showing 3.55 XL9 and XL5 Max Tow options

Why “3.55 gears” in a listing isn’t enough

An F-150 axle code identifies a specific factory rear axle, and the ratio is only part of that identity. Ford’s 2025 order guide gives two different codes a 3.55 ratio and two a 3.73 ratio, and only one of each pair is the Max Tow axle.

Who this is for

  • Shopping a used or lot truck: start with where the code is, then the Max Tow trap.
  • Sizing a truck for a trailer: go to what the code changes about towing.
  • Comparing two builds: use the code table and the trim section.

What the code can and can’t tell you

The code tells you which axle left the factory. It can’t tell you what the truck tows, because that depends on the whole build laid out in our F-150 specs by configuration matrix.

ℹ️ Safety Note: Tow ratings belong to an exact build, and the axle is only one part of that build. Nothing on this page is a tow rating for your truck. Verify against Ford’s towing guide and the door-jamb label for your VIN before hitching anything.

📍 Check your own vehicle first: Specifications vary by build date, package and market, and two trucks with the same badge can be built differently. Before you buy anything based on this page, confirm against the door-jamb certification label, the original window sticker, and dealer VIN build data. If your vehicle disagrees with this page, your vehicle is right.

Where the axle code is on a 2025–2026 F-150

The first place to look is the label on the driver’s side of the truck.

Find the AXLE field on the driver-side door-jamb certification label, then confirm it with VIN build data.

The AXLE field on the certification label

Ford says the Safety Compliance Certification Label sits on the driver’s side door jamb and includes an AXLE code alongside the VIN, axle weight ratings, tire size and spring code. Ford explains every field in its guide to the door-jamb certification label .

When the label is missing or replaced

Ford supplies replacement labels only through its dealers and only for up to five model years. The label records the factory build, so it can’t show an axle swapped later.

✅ Do This: Photograph the whole label before you negotiate. Then compare its AXLE field with the window sticker or dealer build data for the same VIN.

Non-locking and electronic-locking codes

The three X-codes sit under Ford’s non-limited-slip heading. The XL-codes sit under electronic-locking.

XL9 vs XL5 and XL6 vs XL7: the Max Tow trap

Two F-150s can both show “3.55 electronic-locking” and still carry different axles.

What Ford says Max Tow adds

Ford ties maximum trailer tow capability to the Max Tow axle but doesn’t list its hardware differences in the order guide. Treat any seller’s claim about brakes or axle design as unverified. See what the Tow/Haul Package includes versus the Max Tow axle.

Wheel sizes that rule Max Tow out

For MY2025, Ford doesn’t offer Max Tow axles on the XL or XLT 300A. They also aren’t available with 17-inch, 18-inch chrome-like PVD or 22-inch wheels.

🚫 Fits But Shouldn’t: A listing calls a truck “Max Tow” because it has 3.55 or 3.73 electronic-locking gears. The ratio matches, but Ford’s maximum tow capability requires XL5 or XL7, and XL9 and XL6 share those ratios. The axle option code in the VIN build data settles it.

✅ Do This: Ask the dealer’s service department to pull the VIN build data and name the rear axle option code: XL5, XL7, XL9 or XL6. A factory Max Tow listing on 17-inch, 18-inch chrome-like PVD or 22-inch wheels needs a second look.

What the axle code changes about tow ratings

The axle is one input to an F-150’s tow rating, not the rating itself.

Why the axle is one variable in the rating

Ford says its top F-150 ratings require the Tow/Haul Package and the optional Max Tow Axle. It also says capability varies with trim series, option content and payload. Match engine, cab, wheelbase, drivetrain and axle together in Ford’s 2026 F-150 towing guide, or compare builds in our F-150 towing capacity by engine chart.

Payload still comes from your label

Ford directs buyers to the door-jamb label for a specific truck’s carrying capacity. Tongue weight draws on that same payload, as our guide to payload versus tongue weight shows.

⚠️ Watch Out: An advertised maximum belongs to one configuration. A number borrowed from a different axle or package tells you nothing about the truck in front of you. Find the line that matches its full build.

Axle codes that come with a trim or package

Some packages choose the axle for you, which is how a listing’s ratio can be right and its description wrong.

🔍 What This Spec Means: Taller-than-stock tires change the truck’s effective gearing, but the axle code on the label stays the same.

Four checks before you buy a “Max Tow” F-150

These four checks turn a listing’s claims into facts you can confirm.

Label, build data and towing guide

  1. Photograph the door-jamb label and record the AXLE field.
  2. Get the window sticker or dealer VIN build data and find the rear axle option code.
  3. Match engine, cab, wheelbase, drivetrain and axle to one line in Ford’s towing guide.

VIN recall lookup

  1. Run the VIN for open recalls. For example, NHTSA recall report 23V-896 covers certain 2021–2023 F-150s with the Trailer Tow Max Duty package and a 9.75-inch heavy-duty ¾-float axle.

✅ Do This: Before signing, ask the dealer to confirm in writing the rear axle option code and any open recalls for that exact VIN.

FAQ

1. What does XL6 mean on an F-150?

In Ford’s 2025 F-150 order guide, XL6 is a 3.73 electronic-locking rear axle. It is not XL7, the 3.73 Max Tow version.

2. Is XL7 the F-150 Max Tow axle?

Yes. Ford’s 2025 order guide lists XL7 as the 3.73 Max Tow electronic-locking axle, offered as a Tow/Haul Package upgrade. Confirm the code in the VIN build data.

3. What is the difference between XL5 and XL9?

Both are 3.55 electronic-locking F-150 axles in Ford’s 2025 guide; only XL5 is the Max Tow axle Ford requires for maximum tow capability. Confirm in the VIN build data.

4. Where is the axle code on an F-150?

It is on the Safety Compliance Certification Label on the driver’s side door jamb, in the field Ford labels AXLE.

5. Does the F-150 FX4 package include a locking axle?

For MY2025, yes. FX4 includes an electronic-locking rear axle: 3.31 with the 5.0L or 3.5L EcoBoost, and 3.55 with the 2.7L.

6. What axle does the F-150 Tremor have?

Ford lists a 3.73 electronic-locking rear axle with a 9.75-inch gearset as standard on the 2025 and 2026 Tremor.

7. What axle does the F-150 Raptor have?

Ford’s 2025 and 2026 F-150 order guides both list a 4.10 rear axle as standard equipment on the Raptor.

8. Can an F-150 with 22-inch wheels have the Max Tow axle?

Not on a MY2025 factory order. Ford lists Max Tow axles as unavailable with 17-inch, 18-inch chrome-like PVD or 22-inch wheels. Confirm in the VIN build data.

9. Does the axle code set F-150 towing capacity?

No. The axle code is one variable; Ford says capability also depends on configuration, trim series, option content and payload. Match your build in Ford’s towing guide.

10. Do older Ford axle code charts work on a 2025 F-150?

Don’t rely on them. Check a 2025 F-150 axle code against Ford’s 2025 order guide or the truck’s VIN build data.

Before you pay for the axle in the listing

A ratio in a listing is a claim; the axle option code is the fact. Check the AXLE field on the door label, confirm the code in the build data, and match the full build to Ford’s towing guide. If the truck and this page disagree, the truck is right.
