Tremor vs FX4 vs Raptor, Documented by Axle, Tires and Suspension

Table of Contents
FX4, Tremor or Raptor: three different things, not three levels
On the 2026 F-150, these three names describe different kinds of things, and that’s where most comparisons go wrong.
Package vs trim vs chassis
The FX4 Off-Road Package is an option on a 4×4 XLT, Lariat, King Ranch or Platinum, so everything else about the truck comes from that trim. Tremor is its own trim, sold only as a SuperCrew 4×4 with a 5.5-ft box. Raptor is also its own trim, and it replaces the leaf-spring rear with a 5-link coil setup.
Which one you’re really choosing
- Cross-shopping all three: start with the hardware tables in the next section.
- Towing a camper or boat: read the towing section before anything else.
- Buying bed accessories: see what carries over between boxes.
- Standing on a dealer lot: use the door-label check near the end.
For configurations beyond these three, see the full F-150 configuration specs.
ℹ️ Safety Note: Tow ratings and tire load ratings depend on your exact build. Exceeding one affects braking and stability, not just performance. The figures here are for comparison; verify against Ford’s towing guide and the door-jamb label for your VIN before hitching anything.
📍 Check your own vehicle first: Specifications vary by build date, package and market, and two trucks with the same badge can be built differently. Before you buy anything based on this page, confirm against the Safety Compliance Certification Label on the driver’s door edge (axle code, GVWR), the tire and loading placard, and the window sticker or VIN build sheet. If your vehicle disagrees with this page, your vehicle is right.
What’s actually different under each truck
Underneath, the Raptor is the outlier. It is the only one of the three with a coil-spring rear, FOX Live Valve shocks and a 4.10 axle.
Suspension and shocks

Sources: Ford’s 2026 F-150 order guide and technical specifications. The FX4 shock content comes from Ford’s STX FX4 (201A) listing. *Ford’s spec sheet assigns this transfer case to Tremor, but the order guide lists it inside Tremor equipment groups above 401A.
🔍 What This Spec Means: An “LT” prefix or “C” suffix marks a light-truck tire, which is built to a different load standard than the passenger-type tires on most trims. Tire load ratings aren’t interchangeable between these trucks, so read the tire and loading placard on the specific truck.
Ground clearance and angles, by Ford’s own numbers

Ford’s 2026 spec sheet lists 10.7 inches of ground clearance for the Tremor and 11.9 inches for a Raptor on 35-inch tires.
Tremor vs standard 4×4 vs Raptor 35/37
| Dimension | Std SuperCrew 4×4, 5.5-ft | Tremor | Raptor 35-in / 37-in | Applies To |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ground clearance (in) | 9.8 | 10.7 | 11.9 / 13.1 | 2026 MY |
| Approach angle | 25.9° | 27.6° | 30.7° / 33.1° | 2026 MY |
| Departure angle | 24.9° | 24.1° | 23.5° / 24.9° | 2026 MY |

Source: Ford’s 2026 F-150 technical specifications, V1.1 (03/31/26). Ford publishes no separate FX4 column, so an FX4 truck’s baseline figures are its host trim’s.
Why dealer figures disagree
Published Tremor ground-clearance figures range from 9.4 to 10.9 inches, and the Raptor is often listed at a flat 12. Some of these reflect earlier model years or different measuring points. None of them should override the current Ford document.
Which engines and axle ratios each one gets
The Raptor’s engine is fixed, the Tremor has two choices, and an FX4 truck takes whatever engine its host trim offers.
2021–2023 vs 2024–2026
Ford revised Tremor and FX4 content during this generation, and this page verifies 2026 documents only. For 2026, the Tremor comes standard with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6, with the 5.0L V8 optional, both on the 3.73 axle. For an earlier truck, its window sticker is the record.
Raptor’s 4.10 and what it signals
The Raptor uses the 3.5L EcoBoost High Output, rated at 450 hp and 510 lb-ft. The Raptor R uses a supercharged 5.2L V8 rated at 720 hp and 640 lb-ft. Both run a 4.10 axle, which suits their larger tires, and Ford rates both engines on premium 91-octane fuel.
On an FX4, the e-locker ratio depends on engine and trim. For example, Ford’s STX FX4 group pairs a 3.55 with the 2.7L.
Towing: why more off-road capability means less trailer
In Ford’s 2026 towing guide, each step toward more off-road hardware lowers the maximum loaded trailer weight.
Tremor rows vs the 13,500 lb headline
| Configuration (SuperCrew 4×4) | Axle | GCWR (lb) | Max loaded trailer (lb) | What It Includes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tremor, 3.5L EcoBoost | 3.73 | 17,100 | 10,600 | Tremor trim-series row |
| Tremor, 5.0L V8 | 3.73 | 15,800 | Tremor-footnoted row | |
| Raptor, 3.5L H.O. | 4.10 | 14,600–14,650 | 8,200 | Raptor only |
| Raptor R, 5.2L SC | 4.10 | 15,300 | 8,700 | Raptor R only |
Source: Ford’s 2026 F-150 towing guide, revised 03/10/26, calculated using the SAE J2807 method. The 3.5L EcoBoost’s headline 13,500 lb requires the Tow/Haul Package and Max Tow Axle; it is not a Tremor or Raptor figure. An FX4 truck’s rating follows its own engine, axle and GCWR row, and our towing capacity by engine chart covers those rows.
Raptor and Raptor R limits
Ford lists Raptor payload at 1,405 lb on 37-inch tires. Trailer tongue weight, which Ford’s guidance puts at about 10% of trailer weight, comes out of that payload. Ford also limits trailers to 5,000 lb without a weight-distribution system and doesn’t recommend 5th-wheel towing on Raptor.
🚫 Fits But Shouldn’t: Ford’s standard 2-inch receiver is rated at 11,600 lb, which is more than a Raptor’s 8,200 lb rating. The hitch accepting a trailer doesn’t mean the truck is rated for it; the lower number governs.
✅ Do This: Ask the dealer or a qualified technician for the towing-guide row that matches the truck’s engine, axle code and GCWR. Then check GVWR and payload on the door-jamb label.
Which bed and cab accessories carry over between them
Most bed accessories carry over between these trucks when the box length matches. Body-side parts don’t.
Shared 5.5-ft box
Ford lists the 5.5-ft box at 67.1 in of floor length (67.2 on Raptor) and 50.6 in between the wheelhouses. Its order guide offers the same 5.5-ft cover line on XLT, Tremor and Raptor. An FX4 on a 6.5-ft box needs a 6.5-ft cover (78.9 in), so see tonneau cover fit by generation.
Raptor-only width and Tremor-only parts
The Raptor’s flared fenders and box outers, and the Tremor’s unique running boards, make body-side accessories trim-specific. Match those parts by trim, not by “F-150.”
Check the hardware on the truck, not the badge
The badge tells you the name. The door-jamb label and the window sticker tell you the hardware.
Reading the axle code (L6 vs L4)
Ford prints a two-digit axle code under the bar code on the Safety Compliance Certification Label. The electronic-locking codes are L3 = 3.31, L9 = 3.55, L6 = 3.73 and L4 = 4.10, and our guide shows how to decode the axle code. A 2026 Tremor should read L6, and a Raptor should show the 4.10 code.
Window sticker and build sheet
Look for package code 55A, or STX group 201A, to confirm FX4. An FX4 truck keeps its host trim’s transfer case.
⚠️ Watch Out: Raptor-size tires on a Tremor don’t bring Raptor hardware. The Raptor’s front track is 74.0–74.3 in against the Tremor’s 68.5, and the Raptor has a coil rear. Check Raptor wheels on a regular F-150 before buying.
✅ Do This: On a used truck, ask a qualified technician to confirm the axle code, the rear suspension type, and the tire load rating against the placard.
Frequently asked questions
1. Is the F-150 Tremor just an FX4 with bigger tires?
No. The 2026 Tremor adds unique control arms, a unique front knuckle, a 3.73 e-locker and 275/70R18 tires.
2. Does the Tremor have Fox shocks?
Ford’s 2026 order guide lists off-road front and rear shocks on Tremor. It lists FOX Live Valve shocks on Raptor.
3. Can a Raptor tow as much as a Tremor?
No. Ford rates the 2026 Raptor at 8,200 lb and the Tremor’s 3.5L EcoBoost row at 10,600 lb. Confirm on your door-jamb label.
4. What axle ratio does the 2026 Tremor have?
It has a 3.73 electronic-locking rear axle with a 9.75-inch gearset, according to Ford’s order guide.
5. Is the F-150 Tremor 4×4 only?
Yes. For 2026, Ford sells the Tremor only as a SuperCrew 4×4 with a 5.5-foot box.
6. Does the FX4 package add a lift?
Ford publishes no separate FX4 ride height, so treat FX4 clearance as the host trim’s figure.
7. What tire size is on the 2026 Tremor?
It uses 275/70R18 all-terrain tires on 18-inch dark-matte wheels. Confirm on your tire and loading placard.
8. How can I tell if an F-150 has FX4?
Check the window sticker for package 55A or STX group 201A, and check the door label for an electronic-locking axle code.
9. Does the Raptor use leaf springs?
No. The 2026 Raptor uses a 5-link coil rear with a Panhard rod, while FX4 and Tremor trucks keep leaf springs.
10. Can you get FX4 on a 6.5-foot bed?
Tremor and Raptor are 5.5-foot only. FX4 host trims offer a 6.5-foot box, so confirm 55A availability on that order.
Choosing by use, not by badge
If most of your miles are paved, FX4 hardware on the trim you want may be enough. If trails are the point, Tremor adds real geometry and a 3.73 locker. If towing matters most, the non-Raptor rows rate higher. Whichever you choose, confirm the axle code, GVWR and payload on that truck’s door-jamb label before you buy.
