Exact F-150 Tow/Haul Package vs Max Tow Axle Content by Engine

Tow/Haul Package 53T vs Max Tow Axle on a 2024–2026 F-150

The two tow boxes on an F-150 order sheet, and what each one does

Two separate line items on a 2024–2026 F-150 order sheet deal with towing: the Tow/Haul Package, option code 53T, and the Max Tow Axle upgrade. They are not the same box, and ticking one does not give you the other.

Configuring a new truck? The next two sections cover what each one adds. Sizing for a trailer you already own? The by-engine ratings follow those. Standing in front of a truck on a lot? Go straight to the window-sticker checks near the end. Shopping a 2021–2023 truck? Those years packaged this differently, and that has its own section.

Broader build questions are covered in the full F-150 configuration matrix.

ℹ️ Safety Note: Tow ratings depend on your exact build, and exceeding one affects braking and stability, not just how hard the truck works. Every figure here is for comparison between configurations. Verify the rating for your own VIN against Ford’s towing guide and your door-jamb label before hitching anything.

📍 Check your own vehicle first: Specifications vary by build date, package and market, and two trucks wearing the same badge can be built differently. Before you buy anything based on this page, confirm against the Safety Compliance Certification Label on the driver’s door pillar, the yellow tire and loading placard beside it, and the option list on the window sticker or dealer build sheet. If your vehicle disagrees with this page, your vehicle is right.

What the Tow/Haul Package (53T) actually includes

The Tow/Haul Package is the option that adds towing hardware to the truck, and 53T is the code it appears under on a window sticker.

Which axle comes with it depends on the engine

📐 On the Spec Sheet: Ford’s description of the Tow/Haul Package states that it includes the integrated trailer brake controller and either the 3.55 or 3.73 electronic-locking rear axle, depending on the powertrain. (2026 model year) .

Which trucks can have it

The 2026 F-150 order guide lists 53T as optional on XL, STX, XLT, Lariat and Tremor, included in the Tremor 402B group, and standard on King Ranch and Platinum. It is not available with the 2.7L EcoBoost. On 2.7L trucks the integrated trailer brake controller is instead a standalone option, code 67T.

What the Max Tow Axle adds on top of the package

A 14,000-lb hitch receiver rating is not the same as the F-150’s maximum published towing rating.

The Max Tow Axle is a separate upgrade, ordered alongside 53T rather than inside it, and the part of it buyers miss is that it changes a rated physical component.

📐 On the Spec Sheet: Ford’s 2026 F-150 Towing Guide lists a 2″ hitch receiver rated at 11,600 lbs as standard, and states that the Max Tow Axle includes a reinforced 2″ receiver rated at 14,000 lbs. (2026 model year, F-150 pickup; excludes Lightning).

That 14,000-lb figure is the receiver’s own capacity, not the truck’s. More on how a hitch receiver rating differs from a tow rating.

What each combination is rated to tow, by engine

Ford requires both boxes above a stated trailer weight: 11,600 lbs on gas F-150 pickups and 10,800 lbs on the PowerBoost hybrid. Below those thresholds, neither is required.

Without that footnoted equipment, the 3.5L EcoBoost tops out at 11,000 lbs in the same table. Full ratings by engine are in our F-150 towing capacity chart.

If you are shopping a 2021 to 2023 F-150 instead

Those model years did not split the options this way. The equivalent capability was sold as a single Max Trailer Tow Package, so a 2022 window sticker will not show 53T at all.

The headline number was also different. Ford’s 2023 RV and trailer towing guide lists a 14,000-lb maximum on SuperCab 8′ box 4×2 and SuperCrew 4×2 configurations with the 3.5L EcoBoost and that package. The 2021 and 2022 guides carry the same figure and the same configuration.

That is why two different “maximum F-150 towing” numbers both look correct online. They belong to different years.

Which boxes you need for the trailer you actually pull

Work from your loaded trailer weight, not the empty weight on the brochure.

⚠️ Watch Out: Ford states that your New Vehicle Limited Warranty may be voided if you tow above those thresholds without the required equipment. The threshold is a requirement, not a recommendation — 11,600 lbs on gas, 10,800 lbs on the hybrid.

Two limits apply regardless of which boxes you tick. Ford’s guide states not to exceed 5,000 lbs of trailer without a weight-distribution system, and puts tongue load at roughly 10% of loaded trailer weight. That tongue load comes out of payload, alongside passengers and cargo.

✅ Do This: Before you order, run your loaded trailer weight through our payload and tongue weight calculator, then ask the dealer for the build sheet payload figure for that exact configuration — not the trim’s best-case number. On how payload and tongue weight interact, payload is usually what runs out first.

Four ways buyers get this wrong on the window sticker

🚫 Fits But Shouldn’t: Four misreadings, and the specification that settles each. Tow/haul mode is not the Tow/Haul Package. Ford’s order guide lists Tow/Haul among the selectable drive modes standard on the base XL. Seeing it on the screen tells you nothing about 53T. A 14,000-lb receiver is not a 14,000-lb truck. Maximum published conventional towing is 13,500 lbs. The door-label axle code gives the ratio, not the package. Ford’s code table lists 3.55 e-locking as L9 and 3.73 e-locking as L6. The option list is what confirms 53T and the Max Tow Axle. A 2021–2023 figure is not a 2024–2026 figure. 14,000 lbs and 13,500 lbs belong to different years.

Photograph both door-jamb labels and the option list, and confirm the codes before you sign.

F-150 Tow/Haul Package and Max Tow Axle: common questions

1. What does the F-150 Tow/Haul Package include?

The Tow/Haul Package includes the integrated trailer brake controller and either a 3.55 or 3.73 electronic-locking rear axle, depending on powertrain.

2. Is the Max Tow Axle included in the Tow/Haul Package?

No. The Max Tow Axle is a separate upgrade ordered alongside 53T, and Ford requires both to reach maximum rated towing. Confirm your window sticker lists both.

3. What does option code 53T mean?

53T is Ford’s order code for the Tow/Haul Package on 2024–2026 F-150 trucks. It appears as its own line on the sticker.

4. Do I need both options to tow 10,000 pounds?

Ford requires both above 11,600 pounds on gas engines and 10,800 on the hybrid. Payload can still bind first. Check your door placard.

5. Is tow/haul mode the same as the Tow/Haul Package?

No. Tow/haul is a selectable drive mode standard across the F-150 range. The Tow/Haul Package is optional hardware, ordered separately.

6. How much can an F-150 tow without the Max Tow Axle?

The standard hitch receiver is rated 11,600 pounds, and the 3.5L EcoBoost tops out at 11,000 pounds without the footnoted equipment. Read your own row.

7. Can I get the Tow/Haul Package with the 2.7L EcoBoost?

No. Ford’s 2026 order guide lists the Tow/Haul Package as unavailable with the 2.7L EcoBoost engine on every series that offers it.

8. Can the Max Tow Axle be added after purchase?

No. It is a factory option that changes the rated rear axle and the hitch receiver, so it has to be ordered with the truck.

9. How do I tell if a truck on the lot has the Max Tow Axle?

Read the option list on the window sticker or build sheet. The door-label axle code shows ratio only. Ask the dealer to confirm both codes.

10. Does the Tow/Haul Package increase payload?

No. Payload is set by your truck’s build and printed on the yellow placard, and added equipment weight reduces it.

Before you order

The Tow/Haul Package adds the brake controller and the electronic-locking axle. The Max Tow Axle adds the reinforced 14,000-lb receiver and the rated capacity that goes with it. Above 11,600 lbs on gas or 10,800 on the hybrid, Ford requires both. Check the sticker for both codes and the placard for your payload before you sign anything.
