Confirm Your F-150 Battery Size by Engine and Model Year

Ford F-150 Battery Size guide showing a pickup truck, AGM 12V battery, installed battery label and VIN verification card

Which battery does your F-150 take? Start with the engine page

There is no single F-150 battery size for 2021–2026 trucks. Ford lists the 12-volt battery by powertrain in each model year’s owner’s manual. In earlier F-150 manuals, it listed two Motorcraft AGM batteries, BAGM-48H6-760 and BAGM-94RH7-800, on the page for a single engine.

The short answer

Your truck’s model year and engine tell you which page of Ford’s manual to read. The label on your installed battery tells you which listed part your truck actually has.

Which situation are you in?

  • Replacing a battery in a truck you own: see the engine table and “How to confirm” below.
  • Thinking about a larger battery: read the H6/H7/H8 comparison, then the upsizing section.
  • Driving a PowerBoost, diesel, or Lightning: go straight to the exceptions section.

📍 Check your own vehicle first: Specifications vary by build date, package and market, and two trucks with the same badge can be built differently. Before you buy anything based on this page, confirm against the label on your installed battery and the Motorcraft Parts page of your owner’s manual for your exact year and engine. If your vehicle disagrees with this page, your vehicle is right.

F-150 battery by engine: where Ford lists each one

Ford’s owner’s manual gives each F-150 powertrain its own Motorcraft Parts page, and that page is where the battery part number lives.

📐 On the Spec Sheet: Ford’s 2021 F-150 owner’s manual has separate Motorcraft Parts pages for the 2.7L EcoBoost, 3.0L Diesel, 3.3L, 3.5L EcoBoost, 3.5L EcoBoost Raptor, 3.5L Hybrid and 5.0L. The 2022 manual lists pages for the 2.7L, 3.3L, 3.5L EcoBoost, 3.5L Hybrid, 5.0L and Raptor, with no diesel page.

Does engine or auto start-stop change the battery?

The engine decides which manual page applies, but it doesn’t always settle the part.

Why the same engine can list two batteries

Ford’s 2019 F-150 manual shows the pattern. The 2.7L EcoBoost page lists both BAGM-48H6-760 and BAGM-94RH7-800, and the page doesn’t say which truck gets which. That’s why the label on your installed battery decides between them.

Where start-stop fits in

🔍 What This Spec Means: “AGM” (absorbent glass mat) is a battery construction, not a size. Every Ford part number in this article starts with “BAGM,” and Motorcraft describes its 48/H6 AGM as built to power start-stop systems and onboard electronics.

PowerBoost, diesel and Lightning: the 12V exceptions

Hybrid, diesel and electric F-150s each have their own 12-volt battery listing. Don’t assume a gas-engine answer carries over to them.

3.5L PowerBoost hybrid

The PowerBoost has its own Motorcraft Parts page in the 2021 and 2022 manuals. Read that page, not the 3.5L EcoBoost page. If you’re weighing a PowerBoost purchase, see our breakdown of the F-150 hybrid’s towing capacity.

3.0L Power Stroke diesel

The diesel has a Motorcraft Parts page in the 2021 manual but not in the 2022 manual.

⚠️ Watch Out: This article covers only the 12V battery. High-voltage hybrid and EV batteries are not user-serviceable, and nothing here applies to them.

H6 vs H7 vs H8: Ford’s published specs side by side

The three Motorcraft AGM batteries you’ll see for F-150s differ in cold cranking amps (CCA) and amp-hours (Ah).

Motorcraft specifications

BAGM-49H849 (H8)95 AhF-150 applications per your manual page

Which specification suits which use

Higher CCA helps with cold starts, and higher Ah means more reserve for electrical loads. Both only help if the battery is the one your truck’s manual page lists.

Can you put a bigger battery in an F-150?

A battery that fits in the tray doesn’t necessarily match the specification your truck was built with.

Same tray is not the same spec

In the sources we checked, Ford does not say whether a larger group is approved for a truck built with a smaller one. Before upsizing, confirm by VIN with a Ford parts counter.

Flooded vs AGM

🚫 Fits But Shouldn’t: A flooded (non-AGM) battery in the same group size will physically fit. However, the Ford parts listed here are all AGM, and the “AGM” in the part number is the specification that rules the flooded one out. Match the construction type, not just the group number.

Advice written for older trucks

Check that any battery guide names your model year. A group size quoted for a different generation isn’t evidence for yours.

Before you buy a replacement, record the existing battery’s part number, group size, AGM chemistry, CCA rating, capacity, and terminal layout.

How to confirm your F-150’s battery size before you buy

Confirm the battery on the truck itself before you order a replacement.

  1. Read the label on your installed battery. Note the part number, group and CCA.
  2. Open your owner’s manual’s Motorcraft Parts page for your model year and engine. Ford’s owner manual library lets you pick your year. The 2021 F-150 manual PDF is a direct example.
  3. Cross-check by VIN at a Ford parts counter if the label is missing or the page lists two batteries.

F-150 battery FAQ

1. What F-150 battery size does a 2021 truck take?

It depends on the engine. Ford’s 2021 manual lists the F-150 battery on a separate Motorcraft Parts page for each powertrain.

2. Does the F-150 need an AGM battery?

The Motorcraft F-150 battery parts covered here are all AGM. Motorcraft describes its Group 48/H6 AGM as built for start-stop systems.

3. How many CCA is the H6 F-150 battery?

Ford lists the Motorcraft BAGM-48H6-760 at 760 cold cranking amps and 70 amp-hours.

4. What’s the difference between an H6 and an H7 F-150 battery?

Ford lists the Group 94R/H7 Motorcraft battery at 800 CCA and the Group 48/H6 at 760 CCA.

5. Can I put an H8 battery in my F-150?

Only after confirming by VIN. Tray fit alone doesn’t show that a larger F-150 battery matches your truck’s cables, hold-down and settings.

6. Where is the PowerBoost’s 12V battery listed?

On the PowerBoost’s own Motorcraft Parts page in the owner’s manual. Check that page, not the 3.5L EcoBoost page, before buying an F-150 battery.

7. Does the engine change the F-150 battery size?

The engine decides which manual page applies, but Ford can list more than one F-150 battery on a single engine page.

8. Is the diesel in the 2022 F-150 manual?

No. Ford’s 2022 F-150 manual has no 3.0L diesel Motorcraft Parts page, although the 2021 manual has one.

9. Where do I find my F-150 battery size?

Read the label on the installed battery. Then confirm on the Motorcraft Parts page for your exact model year and engine.

10. Do I have to use a Motorcraft F-150 battery?

Ford recommends Motorcraft parts. Its manual says the warranty could be void for any damage related to use of other parts.

Buy the battery your truck lists

For 2021–2026 F-150s, the engine points you to a manual page, and the label on your battery settles which part you need. Confirm both before you order. If the two disagree, go by the label on your truck and cross-check by VIN.
