Correct Silverado 1500 Engines by Year, Matched to RPO Code

Which Silverado 1500 engine did your truck get?

The engine in a Silverado 1500 depends on its model year, and two trucks with the same badge can carry very different powertrains. This page covers engines only; tow and payload ratings live in our pillar, Chevy Silverado 1500 specs by configuration.

📍 Check your own vehicle first: Specifications vary by build date, package and market, and two trucks with the same badge can be built differently. Before you buy anything based on this page, confirm against the Service Parts Identification Label (it lists your truck’s RPO codes), the window sticker, and the owner’s manual. If your vehicle disagrees with this page, your vehicle is right.

Silverado 1500 engines by year at a glance

Silverado 1500 Engines lineup comparison showing six engine options from 2019–2021 reduced to four after the 2022 refresh.
The 2022 refresh reduced the Silverado 1500 engine lineup from six choices to four.

Silverado 1500 engines changed three times between 2019 and 2027: the 2022 refresh cut six engines to four, 2023 uprated the diesel, and 2027 replaces both V8s.

The 2019–2021 engines

A 4.3L V6 and an older 5.3L V8 were still on offer, and the diesel arrived for 2020.

The 2022–2026 engines

Four engines ran through 2026: the 2.7L turbo, 5.3L, 6.2L and 3.0L Duramax.

The 2027 engines

Two new V8s replace the 5.3L and 6.2L.

What changed for 2022, and the LTD trap

Silverado 1500 Engines warning comparing the 2022 LTD 2.7L turbo at 348 lb-ft with the refreshed 2022 2.7L turbo at 430 lb-ft.
A 2022 Silverado 1500 LTD and a refreshed 2022 Silverado can share a model year but use different 2.7L turbo calibrations.

GM refreshed the truck for 2022, and the engines changed.

The 4.3L and AFM 5.3L exit

GM told the 2021 Work Truck Show the 4.3L V6 and L82 5.3L V8 would not return, and the refreshed lineup lists neither.

The 2.7L torque jump, 348 to 430 lb-ft

GM’s launch release promised 20% more torque from the 2.7L; some early coverage rounded that to 420 lb-ft, but GM’s order guide later listed 430, as reported.

2022 LTD versus refreshed 2022

🚫 Fits But Shouldn’t: A “2022 Silverado 1500” can be the carry-over LTD or the refreshed truck, and their 2.7L ratings differ. The LTD carries the older 348 lb-ft; quoting 430 for it overstates the engine. Check the window sticker or VIN build sheet.

Which Silverado has which 3.0L Duramax?

No: the 2019 Silverado 1500 shipped without a diesel, and the 3.0L Duramax arrived for 2020.

The 2019 diesel that wasn’t

GM announced it for early 2019, could not ship it on time, and tied it to the 2020 launch.

LM2: 2020 through 2022

The first diesel made 277 hp and 460 lb-ft, SAE-certified, on LT, RST, LTZ and High Country, per GM’s 2020 release as reported.

LZ0: 2023 on, ZR2 from 2024

The refined LZ0 followed for 2023 on select trims, and GM added it to the ZR2 for 2024; see our Z71, Trail Boss and ZR2 comparison.

EngineApplies ToOutput (hp / lb-ft)What Changed
Duramax LM22020–2022277 / 460First-generation diesel
Duramax LZ02023–2027305 / 495New pistons, turbo tune, injectors

📐 On the Spec Sheet: GM’s August 2022 release lists the refined diesel at a GM-estimated 305 hp and 495 lb-ft, up from 277 and 460 in the 2022 model year, with new steel pistons, a retuned turbo compressor and new injectors.

The 5.3L and 6.2L V8s: same ratings, different codes

Both V8s held their ratings for years.

5.3L L82 versus L84

The 2019 truck offered two 5.3Ls, both rated 355 hp and 383 lb-ft: the L82 with Active Fuel Management and a 6-speed, the L84 with Dynamic Fuel Management and an 8-speed. Only the L84 continued past 2021.

🚫 Fits But Shouldn’t: Same numbers, different engine: an L82 and an L84 share 355 hp and 383 lb-ft. Only the RPO code, or the build sheet, tells them apart.

6.2L L87

The 6.2L stayed at 420 hp and 460 lb-ft from 2019 through 2026, and GM offered it only with four-wheel drive in 2019.

Where tow questions go

Tow ratings turn on cab, bed, drive, axle, package and wheels, so use our towing capacity by engine guide and the Max Trailering Package ratings.

2027: what replaces the 5.3L and 6.2L

GM’s 2027 truck, expected on sale at the end of 2026, keeps four engines but changes three.

The two new V8s

GM’s September 2026 V8 announcement lists the L76 5.7L at 402 hp and 428 lb-ft and the L78 6.6L at 481 hp and 501 lb-ft; both replace the 5.3L and 6.2L.

TurboMax and Duramax carry-overs

The enhanced TurboMax adds 40 hp and 25 lb-ft for 350 hp and 455 lb-ft, and the Duramax returns at 305 and 495. Every 2027 engine uses a 10-speed.

🚫 Fits But Shouldn’t: A 2024 “TurboMax” and a 2027 “enhanced TurboMax” share a name, not a spec: 310/430 versus 350/455, with a new turbocharger, injectors and pistons in 2027.

Estimated versus certified

🔍 What This Spec Means: GM bases its 481 hp claim on estimated ratings; “SAE-certified” means the maker followed SAE’s certification procedure, which is voluntary.

How to confirm the engine on a specific truck

Confirm the engine on the truck, not the ad.

Check the label and window sticker

Find the Service Parts Identification Label and read the engine RPO code, such as L84 or LZ0, then match it to the matrix.

📐 On the Spec Sheet: GM’s Silverado 1500 body-builder manuals state that a truck’s RPO list is printed on the Service Parts Identification Label.

Decode the VIN

NHTSA’s VIN decoder reports the manufacturer-reported details encoded in a VIN; check whether it lists an engine.

Ask for the build sheet

Ask a Chevrolet dealer to pull the build sheet for the VIN. A parts-store lookup is a cross-check only.

✅ Do This: Before you pay, ask the seller for the label or build sheet showing the engine RPO code, and compare it with the matrix.

A Silverado 1500’s engine follows its model year, and the traps cluster around 2019’s missing diesel, the 2022 LTD and the 2023 Duramax change. Match the RPO code on your truck to the matrix, not the badge. Before you buy, confirm the engine on the label or build sheet; if your truck disagrees with this page, your truck is right.
