Factory Tundra Towing Capacity by Trim, Cab, Bed and Drive
Tundra towing capacity by trim hides a catch: every 2026 grade gets a factory hitch, but the SR’s feature list omits the brake controller.

Table of Contents
How much can a Tundra tow? It depends on five choices
A 2026 Toyota Tundra is rated to tow up to 12,000 lb, but only one build reaches that figure. The rest of the lineup sits lower.
The short answer: 8,300 to 12,000 lb
Five choices set a Tundra’s rating: trim, engine, cab, bed length, and 4×2 or 4×4. Change any one and the number moves, sometimes by more than 900 lb.
Find your answer by what you’re choosing
- Cross-shopping trims: start with the trim table below.
- Sizing for a specific trailer: read the cab, bed and drive section, then the payload check.
- Shopping a used 2022–2025 Tundra: read the model-year notes and the verification steps.
- Need more than towing: see every Tundra specification by engine, drive, cab, bed and trim.
ℹ️ Safety Note: Tow ratings depend on your exact build, and exceeding one affects braking, steering and stability, not just performance. The figures here are for comparing builds. Confirm your truck’s limits in its owner’s manual and on its door-jamb labels before hitching anything.
📍 Check your own vehicle first: Specifications vary by build, package and market, and two Tundras with the same badge can carry different ratings. Before you buy a truck or a trailer based on this page, confirm against the Tire and Loading Information placard and certification label on the driver’s door jamb, the towing section of the owner’s manual, and the window sticker for cab, bed, drive and engine. If your truck disagrees with this page, your truck is right.
Tundra towing capacity by trim, and the build behind it

Each 2026 Tundra trim has one top tow rating, and that rating applies to a single cab, bed, drive and engine combination.
| Trim | Top 2026 rating (lb) | Applies To (only this build) | Engine | What It Includes (factory tow gear) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SR | 8,300 | All SR builds | i-FORCE, SR tune | Hitch, 7/4-pin; no brake controller listed |
| SR5 | 12,000 | Double Cab, 6.5-ft bed, 4×2 | i-FORCE | Hitch, 7/4-pin, brake controller |
| Limited | 11,450 | CrewMax, 5.5-ft bed, 4×2 | i-FORCE MAX | Hitch, 7/4-pin, brake controller |
| Platinum | 11,380 | CrewMax, 5.5-ft bed, 4×2 | i-FORCE MAX | Hitch, 7/4-pin, brake controller |
| 1794 Edition | 11,310 or 11,380 (sources conflict) | CrewMax, 5.5-ft bed, 4×2 | i-FORCE or i-FORCE MAX | Hitch, 7/4-pin, brake controller |
| TRD Pro | 11,175 | CrewMax, 5.5-ft bed, 4×4 | i-FORCE MAX | Hitch, 7/4-pin, brake controller |
| Capstone | 10,340 | CrewMax, 5.5-ft bed, 4×4 | i-FORCE MAX | Hitch, 7/4-pin, brake controller |
Toyota’s 2026 documentation confirms the 12,000-lb maximum, the standard hitch and 7/4-pin connector, and the brake controller on SR5. Every other cell.
Gas-engine trims: SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition
The SR5 holds the lineup’s top rating, but only as a 4×2 Double Cab with the 6.5-ft bed. Limited and Platinum reach their highest figures with the optional hybrid on a 4×2 CrewMax.
Hybrid-only trims: TRD Pro and Capstone
Both use the i-FORCE MAX hybrid as 4×4 CrewMax builds with the 5.5-ft bed. Capstone’s rating is the lowest above the SR.
📐 On the Spec Sheet: Toyota’s 2026 Tundra announcement lists a 12,000-pound maximum towing capacity and makes a tow hitch and 7/4-pin connector standard on all 2026 grades, including the SR.
🚫 Fits But Shouldn’t: An SR5 CrewMax 4×4 wears the same badge as the 12,000-lb truck but not the same rating; one 2026 dealer listing shows 11,160 lb for that build. If the window sticker doesn’t read Double Cab, 6.5-ft bed, 4×2, the 12,000-lb figure isn’t yours.
How cab, bed and 4×4 change a Tundra’s tow rating

On a 2026 Tundra, a longer bed, the larger CrewMax cab or 4×4 each lowers the top rating, because each adds weight to the truck.
| Cab | Bed | Drive | Highest 2026 rating (lb) | Applies To |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Double Cab | 6.5 ft | 4×2 | 12,000 | SR5, i-FORCE |
| Double Cab | 8.1 ft | 4×2 | 11,370 | Highest-rated trim in this build |
| Double Cab | 6.5 ft | 4×4 | 11,200 | Highest-rated trim in this build |
| Double Cab | 8.1 ft | 4×4 | 11,090 | Highest-rated trim in this build |
| CrewMax | 5.5 ft | 4×2 | 11,450 | Limited, i-FORCE MAX |
| CrewMax | 6.5 ft | 4×2 | 11,350 | Highest-rated trim in this build |
| CrewMax | 5.5 ft | 4×4 | 11,175 | TRD Pro, i-FORCE MAX |
| CrewMax | 6.5 ft | 4×4 | 11,110 | Highest-rated trim in this build |
Figures are the highest rating published for each build; the source does not name the trim behind every row, and SR builds stay at 8,300 lb.
Double Cab builds
The Double Cab spans 12,000 lb down to 11,090 lb. The 8.1-ft bed and 4×4 each cost rating, and together they cost the most.
CrewMax builds
CrewMax ratings run from 11,450 lb down to 11,110 lb. No CrewMax build reaches the Double Cab’s 12,000 lb.
Why the number drops: curb weight
🔍 What This Spec Means: A tow rating isn’t a separate strength figure. It’s derived from the truck’s gross combined weight rating (GCWR) minus the weight of the truck itself, so every pound of cab, bed or 4×4 hardware comes off the trailer side.
i-FORCE vs i-FORCE MAX: does the hybrid tow more?
No. The i-FORCE MAX hybrid tops out at 11,450 lb, below the gas i-FORCE engine’s 12,000 lb.
Optional on Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition; standard on TRD Pro, Capstone.
Outputs from Toyota’s 2026 Tundra page. Ratings and hybrid availability:
Three engine tunes, three ceilings
The SR runs a lower-output tune and is rated at 8,300 lb. The gas i-FORCE reaches 12,000 lb, and the hybrid stops at 11,450 lb.
More torque, more weight
The hybrid adds 104 lb-ft of torque, but its motor-generator and battery also add weight. That weight comes out of the same combined rating, so the extra torque doesn’t raise the ceiling.
What changed from 2022 to 2026, and what the tow gear adds
Every Tundra rating assumes the truck is properly equipped, so check which tow hardware a given model year left the factory with.
2022–2025: what to check on a used Tundra
The third-generation Tundra launched for 2022 with a 12,000-lb maximum. Toyota made the hitch and 7/4-pin connector standard on every grade only for 2026, so an earlier truck, especially an SR, may lack them.
2026: hitch and wiring now standard
Every 2026 Tundra, SR included, leaves the factory with a tow hitch and a 7/4-pin connector, per Toyota’s 2026 release.
The SR has no integrated trailer brake controller
Toyota lists the tow hitch receiver and Integrated Trailer Brake Controller among the SR5’s features; the SR’s list doesn’t include the controller. A trailer with its own electric brakes needs a working controller to operate them.
⚠️ Watch Out: A hitch on an SR doesn’t mean it can run trailer brakes. Before buying a braked trailer for an SR, confirm the trailer’s brake requirement and have a qualified installer fit and set up a controller.
✅ Do This: On any used 2022–2025 Tundra, read the window sticker or VIN build sheet for the factory tow equipment before you trust its rating.
The 12,000-lb catch: payload runs out before the tow rating
A trailer under your tow rating can still overload the truck, because its tongue weight counts against payload.
Tongue weight counts against payload
Payload is everything the truck carries: people, cargo, accessories, and the downward force of the trailer on the hitch. Toyota’s highest published 2026 Tundra payload is 1,850 lb, and the placard on a specific build can show less.
A worked check for your own trailer
- Find the trailer’s loaded weight, not its brochure dry weight.
- Multiply it by the tongue-weight share your owner’s manual specifies. On a 10,000-lb trailer, every 1% is 100 lb.
- Add everyone riding along, everything in the bed, and the hitch hardware.
- Compare the total with the payload on your door-jamb placard. If the total is higher, the setup doesn’t work, whatever the tow rating says.
🔍 What This Spec Means: GVWR caps the loaded truck; GCWR caps the truck and trailer together. The SAE J2807 tow-rating procedure sets how manufacturers determine these ratings and the trailer weight rating built from them.
✅ Do This: Before you buy, ask the dealer for three things: the payload printed on that exact truck’s placard, the tongue-weight range in its owner’s manual, and whether Toyota requires a weight-distributing hitch above a stated trailer weight.
Where to confirm your Tundra’s real tow rating
Your truck’s door-jamb labels and owner’s manual override every published chart, including this one.
On the truck: door-jamb labels and the window sticker
- Tire and Loading Information placard (driver’s door jamb): the maximum weight of occupants and cargo, which is your real payload.
- Certification label (door jamb): GVWR and the front and rear axle ratings.
- Window sticker or VIN build sheet: cab, bed, drive, engine and factory tow equipment.
- Owner’s manual, towing section: trailer and tongue-weight limits for your build.
Why published Tundra tow charts disagree
We found five disagreements in published 2026 Tundra figures. Each one is settled by Toyota’s own documents, not by another chart.
| Disagreement | What published sources say | What settles it |
|---|---|---|
| The 12,000-lb build | One shopping site’s list says Double Cab, 6.5-ft bed; its own table says a CrewMax with an 8.1-ft bed, a pairing Toyota doesn’t list | Toyota’s towing chart |
| 1794 Edition top rating | 11,310 lb vs 11,380 lb | Toyota’s towing chart |
| SR rating | 8,300 lb on most pages; one pricing guide lists 11,200 lb for a 2026 SR Double Cab | Toyota’s chart and the truck’s manual |
| Maximum payload | 1,850 lb on Toyota’s 2026 page vs 1,940 lb on other sites | Toyota’s 2026 page; your placard for your truck |
| Canadian-market pages | 8,289 lb and 11,199 lb | US-market documentation only |
Toyota announced a refreshed 2027 Tundra in July 2026 and said full specifications arrive in fall 2026; Toyota’s 2027 Tundra announcement carries no tow ratings yet.
Tundra towing FAQ
1. How much can a Toyota Tundra tow?
A 2026 Toyota Tundra tows 8,300 to 12,000 lb, depending on trim, engine, cab, bed and drive. Confirm your truck’s figure on its door-jamb labels.
2. Which Tundra trim tows the most?
The SR5 is the Tundra trim that tows the most, 12,000 lb, but only as a 4×2 Double Cab with the 6.5-foot bed.
3. Can a Tundra SR tow 10,000 lb?
Most published figures rate every 2026 Tundra SR at 8,300 lb, below 10,000 lb. Check that SR’s owner’s manual before buying a trailer.
4. Does the Tundra hybrid tow more?
No. The Tundra’s i-FORCE MAX hybrid tops out at 11,450 lb, below the gas i-FORCE engine’s 12,000 lb, because hybrid parts add weight.
5. Does 4×4 lower Tundra towing capacity?
Yes. A Tundra Double Cab with the 6.5-foot bed drops from 12,000 lb in 4×2 to 11,200 lb in 4×4. Confirm your build in the manual.
6. Double Cab or CrewMax for Tundra towing?
The Tundra Double Cab reaches 12,000 lb; the highest-rated CrewMax build reaches 11,450 lb, because the larger cab adds weight.
7. Is a tow hitch standard on the Tundra?
For 2026, Toyota made a tow hitch and 7/4-pin connector standard on every Tundra grade, including the SR. Check older trucks’ window stickers.
8. What limits a Tundra before its tow rating?
Payload. Tongue weight, passengers and cargo all count against the payload printed on the Tundra’s door-jamb placard. Check that placard before towing.
9. Can a Tundra tow a 30-foot travel trailer?
Trailer length doesn’t decide Tundra towing; weight does. Compare loaded trailer weight with your build’s rating, and tongue weight with placard payload. Verify both on your truck.
10. Will the 2027 Tundra tow more?
Toyota hasn’t published 2027 Tundra tow ratings yet; it said full 2027 Tundra specifications arrive in fall 2026.
Pick the build first, then the trim
The Tundra’s 12,000-lb rating belongs to one build: a 4×2 SR5 Double Cab with the 6.5-ft bed. The hybrid isn’t a towing upgrade, and payload can run out before the tow rating does. Before you sign, match the window sticker to the rating you need, then check the door-jamb placard against your trailer’s tongue weight.
