The Real F150 Engine Options by Trim, 4×2/4×4 and Wheelbase

2026 F-150 Engine availability depends on trim, drivetrain, wheelbase and equipment group

Which F-150 engines can you get on each trim?

The engine you can order on an F-150 depends on five things: trim, equipment group, drivetrain, wheelbase and, for 2026, build date. Dealer pages usually flatten that into one list per trim, and several we checked contradict Ford’s own order guide. Everything below comes from Ford’s order guides.

Shopping new (2026)

Start with the matrix, then read the drivetrain and equipment-group sections before you configure. The hybrid’s availability changed partway through the 2026 model year.

Shopping used (2021–2025)

Jump to the year-by-year section. The 2025 standard engines on Lariat and Tremor were not the same as 2026, and many listings don’t reflect that. For every other dimension of a build, see our full F-150 configuration specs.

⚠️ Watch Out: Trade press reports that Ford’s 2027 F-150 order guide replaces the 2.7L EcoBoost with a new 3.0L EcoBoost as the base engine. Ford had not published that guide on its media site when we checked, so this page covers 2021–2026 only.

ℹ️ Safety Note: This page covers which engines can be ordered, not what they can tow or carry. Tow and payload ratings change with cab, bed, axle ratio and package. Use the certification and Tire and Loading labels on the door jamb of the specific truck, and the towing figures for that exact build, before hitching anything.

📍 Check your own vehicle first: Two trucks with the same badge can be built differently. Before you buy, confirm the engine line and option code on the window sticker (Monroney label) or the Ford build sheet, and check the under-hood emissions label for Federal or 50-state certification. If your vehicle disagrees with this page, your vehicle is right.

Source: Ford’s 2026 F-150 order guide, series and equipment-group pages, revised 04/30/26. “Hybrid” means the 3.5L PowerBoost Full Hybrid V6 (option code 99D).

Work trims: XL, STX, XLT

On the XL, wheelbase decides the standard engine. The 122.5″ Regular Cab gets the 5.0L V8, the 157″ SuperCrew gets the 3.5L EcoBoost, and everything between gets the 2.7L. The STX lists no 3.5L EcoBoost at all.

📐 On the Spec Sheet: Ford’s 2026 order guide lists the XL’s 2.7L EcoBoost as not available with the 122″ or 157″ wheelbase, and the 5.0L V8 as standard on the 122″.

Premium trims: Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum

All three start with the 3.5L EcoBoost. King Ranch lists no V8 for 2026, and Platinum Plus makes the hybrid standard. Our 2026 F-150 trims guide covers what else each trim includes.

Off-road trims: Tremor, Raptor

Tremor starts with the 3.5L EcoBoost, with the V8 optional. Raptor uses a 3.5L High Output, and the 5.2L supercharged V8 is reserved for the Raptor R.

How 4×2, 4×4 and wheelbase change your engine choice

How 4x2, 4x4 and wheelbase restrict 2026 F-150 Engine choices
Your F-150 Engine options change with 4×2/4×4 and wheelbase.

Drivetrain is the gate most buyers miss, and Ford changed it twice for 2026.

4×2 returns on Lariat and above

Ford added 4×2 to Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum for 2026. It appears only on the 145″ SuperCrew with the 5.5′ box. The 157″ wheelbase stays 4×4-only on those trims.

The hybrid 2WD build-date change

The 2025 order guide required 4×4 with the hybrid. For 2026 trucks built on or after April 6, 2026 (Ford’s “Job 2” update), the PowerBoost hybrid became available with 4×2 on STX, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum.

⚠️ Watch Out: A dealer quoting an older copy of the 2026 order guide may tell you a 4×2 hybrid can’t be ordered. Ask which revision they’re reading.

Long-wheelbase limits

On the XLT, the 2.7L isn’t available on the 157″ wheelbase, which comes as 4×4 only, and the 3.5L EcoBoost is standard there. Drivetrain also changes capability, which we cover in how 4×4 and 4×2 change F-150 tow ratings.

Why the same trim can’t always get the same engine

Equipment groups, Ford’s three-digit codes such as 301A, gate engines inside a trim.

V8 on the STX means the Lobo package

The 2026 STX lists the 5.0L V8 only with the F-150 Lobo Package (19S). The order guide lists Lobo as unavailable with 4×2 or with the Tow/Haul Package. That means an STX V8 is a 4×4 SuperCrew.

Hybrid gates by equipment group

  • XL: fleet-only group 104A.
  • XLT: 301A, 302A or 303A SuperCrew, not the base 300A.
  • Lariat: 501A or 502A, not 500A.
  • Platinum: optional on 700A–702A, standard on Platinum Plus (703A).

🔍 What This Spec Means: An equipment group is a fixed bundle within a trim. If the configurator greys out the hybrid, you’re usually one group too low, not on the wrong trim.

What engines 2021–2025 F-150s could have

A used F-150’s possible engines depend on model year, and 2025 differs from 2026 more than most listings admit.

2025: the V8 was the Lariat and Tremor default

Ford’s 2025 order guide lists the 5.0L V8 as standard on Lariat and Tremor, with the 3.5L EcoBoost optional. For 2026 that flipped on both trims. The 2025 guide also listed Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum as 4×4-only, required 4×4 for the hybrid, and made the V8 standard on the XL’s 157″ wheelbase.

📐 On the Spec Sheet: The 2025 Lariat equipment-group page marks the 5.0L V8 (995) “S” and the 3.5L EcoBoost (998) “O” across 500A, 501A and 502A.

2021–2024: the 3.3L, the diesel and the 2.7L base

For the 2024 model year, the 3.3L V6 was dropped and the 2.7L EcoBoost became the base engine. The 3.3L is listed for 2021–2023 and a 3.0L Power Stroke diesel only for 2021.

Picked an engine first? Here’s where to start

Work backward from the engine you want to the 2026 trims that list it.

If you want the V8

The 5.0L V8 is listed on XL (standard on the 122″, optional elsewhere), STX (Lobo only), XLT, Lariat and Tremor. King Ranch and Platinum don’t list it for 2026.

If you want the hybrid

It’s available on STX SuperCrew, XLT 301A and up, Lariat 501A and up, King Ranch and Platinum. The XL gets it only through fleet orders.

If you want the 3.5L EcoBoost as standard

It’s standard on Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum and Tremor, and on the 157″ wheelbase of XL and XLT.

✅ Do This: Choose an engine for towing only after checking the rating for your exact cab, bed, axle and package in our F-150 towing capacity by engine chart. Then ask the dealer: “What are the GCWR and maximum trailer weight for this VIN’s axle code?” Confirm the answer against the door-jamb labels.

Engine combinations that catch buyers out

Some combinations look orderable but aren’t.

Dealer pages that contradict Ford

We found dealer research pages listing a 3.5L EcoBoost on the 2026 STX, and pages describing 4×2 as standard on Lariat through Platinum. The 2026 order guide shows neither.

🚫 Fits But Shouldn’t: You can build a 2.7L EcoBoost XL, STX or XLT, but the Tow/Haul Package (53T) is listed as not available with the 2.7L in both the 2025 and 2026 order guides. If you need that package, change the engine, not the trim. Our Tow/Haul Package vs max tow axle guide explains what the package adds.

⚠️ Watch Out: The 2026 guide says the 50-State Emissions package (425) isn’t available on a 4×2 hybrid. Ford automatically adds that package to hybrid orders from dealers in California, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Vermont and Washington. If you’re buying there, get written confirmation that a 4×2 hybrid order will be accepted before paying a deposit.

How to confirm the engine on a specific truck

  1. Read the engine option code on the window sticker: 99P (2.7L), 995 (5.0L), 998 (3.5L), 99D (hybrid), 99G (3.5L High Output) or 99J (5.2L).
  2. Ask the dealer for the Ford build sheet.
  3. Decode the VIN with NHTSA’s VIN decoder to confirm displacement.
  4. Check the under-hood emissions label for Federal or 50-state certification.

10. How do I check a used F-150’s engine?

Find the engine option code on the F-150’s window sticker or build sheet. Then confirm the displacement with NHTSA’s VIN decoder.

Before you order or buy used

On an F-150, the trim badge alone doesn’t decide the engine. Equipment group, drivetrain, wheelbase, model year and build date all change the answer. Use the matrix to narrow your build. Then confirm the engine code on the window sticker, build sheet or VIN before you sign anything.
