Documented Used F-150 Lightning Specs by Battery and Package

Every used Lightning is a 2022–2025 truck

Ford built the battery-electric F-150 Lightning for four model years, 2022 through 2025, and ended production in December 2025. Every used Lightning on the market is one of those four years.

Why there’s no 2026 or 2021 Lightning

The truck launched as a 2022 model and Ford said production would not resume. The next truck to carry the name is an extended-range model with a gas generator, which is a different vehicle.

What this page covers (and what’s on Throttle Times)

  • Cross-shopping years: start with the battery matrix.
  • Sizing for a trailer: go straight to the towing table.
  • Checking a specific listing: use the five checks at the end.

Reliability and recall history live on our sister site. For every other build, see our F-150 specs by configuration.

ℹ️ Safety Note: Lightning tow ratings depend on battery, the Max Trailer Tow Package and tires, and exceeding one affects braking and stability, not just range. The figures here are for comparison; confirm the rating for the exact truck against Ford’s towing guide for its model year and its door-jamb label before hitching anything.

📍 Check your own vehicle first: Two Lightnings with the same badge can carry different batteries and packages. Before you buy, confirm against the window sticker or VIN build sheet (battery and option codes), the Safety Compliance Certification Label on the driver’s door jamb (GVWR and payload), and the warranty start date. If the truck disagrees with this page, the truck is right.

Which trims got which battery, year by year

Which Lightning trims get which battery, year by year.

Every Lightning is a crew cab with a 5.5-foot bed and dual motors, so the battery is the variable that matters most.

2022–2023: four trims

Pro, XLT, Lariat and Platinum. Platinum always carried the larger pack.

2024: Flash arrives

Ford added Flash as a tech-focused trim paired with the extended range battery.

2025: the battery split narrows

Published trim guides list extended range as standard on Flash, Lariat and Platinum only.

🔍 What This Spec Means: The extended range pack adds 33 kWh of usable capacity and raises output from 452 hp to 580 hp. Torque stays at 775 lb-ft either way, per Ford’s 2023 towing guide.

How far each used Lightning goes on a charge

Vector bar chart showing EPA range for used Ford F‑150 Lightning by battery size and wheel size (230–320 miles)
How battery and wheel size change Lightning range.

EPA range on a used Lightning is set by battery, model year and wheel size.

The 2023 standard-range bump

Standard range trucks are rated at 230 miles for 2022 and 240 miles from 2023. Extended range trucks are rated at 320 miles, except Platinum.

Why Platinum rates lower (22-inch wheels)

Platinum carries the extended range pack but rides on 22-inch wheels, and is rated at 300 miles. Wheel size is also a matching question; see which F-150 wheels fit a Lightning. Confirm any truck’s rating on the EPA’s F-150 Lightning page at fueleconomy.gov.

What a used Lightning can tow depends on two boxes

A used F-150 Lightning is rated to tow between 5,000 and 10,000 lb. The number depends on battery, the Max Trailer Tow Package (53D) and tires, per Ford’s towing guides.

Battery × Max Trailer Tow Package

Ford requires Max Trailer Tow (53D) for trailers over 5,000 lb with standard range, or over 7,700 lb with extended range. Ford’s guide also advises against trailers over 5,000 lb without a weight-distribution system. For that rating in detail, see how the hitch receiver rating differs from the tow rating.

📐 On the Spec Sheet: Ford’s 2025 guide rates the Lightning’s factory receiver at 5,000 lb (500 lb tongue) weight-carrying and 10,000 lb (1,000 lb tongue) weight-distributing.

🚫 Fits But Shouldn’t: A hitch receiver fits any Lightning, but the 10,000 lb row doesn’t transfer to every Lightning. Ford’s 2023 guide ties it to extended range, 53D and 18″ All-Terrain or 20″ All-Season tires; the 20″ All-Terrain row is 9,500–9,600 lb. The tire size on the truck decides which row applies.

Payload is the other half of the rating

Ford assumes a tongue load of about 10% of trailer weight, and that tongue weight counts against payload. Ford’s 2023 maximum payload is 2,235 lb, on a Pro with standard range and 18-inch wheels. The truck’s own figure is on its door-jamb label; see payload vs tongue weight.

The 2025 E-Locker change

On 2025 trucks, the electronic locking rear differential is included in 53D rather than standard. That package also requires 9.6 kW Pro Power Onboard.

✅ Do This: Ask a Ford service department to confirm three things from the VIN: whether option code 53D is present, the tire size the tow row requires, and the payload on the door-jamb label.

Full ratings by year are in Ford’s towing guide library and the 2025 Ford RV & Trailer Towing Guide.

What changed from 2022 to 2025 that a listing won’t say

Year-to-year changes were mostly equipment moves rather than hardware.

2024 additions

  • The Flash trim.
  • A Platinum Black edition.

2025 deletions and additions

  • Deleted or moved:
    • The keypad became dealer-installed.
    • The E-Locker moved into 53D.
    • The Interior Work Surface was dropped on XLT and Flash.
    • The spare tire became optional.
  • Added:
    • A Dark Elements package on Platinum.
    • BlueCruise 1.4.
    • NACS charger locations in Apple CarPlay.

⚠️ Watch Out: Ford’s 2025 towing guide calls for a conventional, identical full-size spare when towing a trailer. On a 2025 truck, confirm a matching spare is present before you plan to tow.

Charging and power features differ by battery

Exportable power and charging hardware vary by trim and package, not just battery.

Pro Power Onboard output

  • 2023: Ford lists 9.6 kW Pro Power Onboard as optional on Pro and XLT (311A), included on XLT (312A), and standard on Lariat and Platinum.
  • 2025: Max Trailer Tow requires the 9.6 kW system.

See Pro Power Onboard output by configuration.

Onboard charger and the NACS adapter

Home-charging speed depends on the truck’s onboard charger.

Before you pay: five checks on any used Lightning

  1. Model year: read the VIN’s 10th character (N = 2022, P = 2023, R = 2024, S = 2025).
  2. Battery: confirm it from the window sticker or build sheet.
  3. Tow package and tires: check for option code 53D and the tire size its row requires.
  4. Warranty: calculate what’s left of the 8-year/100,000-mile EV component coverage from the original in-service date.
  5. Tax credit: don’t budget for the federal used-EV credit; it ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025.

The “2026” listing

Some listing sites and spec aggregators show a 2026 Lightning. Ford ended production with the 2025 model year, so decode the VIN before trusting the year label.

Warranty clock and title status

A used truck inherits the remaining coverage, not a fresh term.

The used EV credit is gone

Price the truck without it. For known problems by year, see F-150 Lightning problems on The Throttle Times.
