PowerBoost vs 3.5 EcoBoost Factory Tow and Payload by Drivetrain

Table of Contents
The PowerBoost hybrid and the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 share the same twin-turbo 3.5-liter engine. The choice comes down to what the electric motor adds and what it costs in rated capability. Ford’s own figures make that trade clear once you split them by drivetrain.
- Cross-shopping engines: start with the power ratings, then the buying-decision section.
- Sizing for a specific trailer: go straight to the towing and payload matrix, then the label check.
- Wanting jobsite or camping power: the Pro Power Onboard notes are in the decision section.
Every other engine and year is in our full F-150 configuration matrix.
βΉοΈ Safety Note: Tow and payload figures here are Ford’s published maximums for specific builds. Exceeding your truck’s rating affects braking and stability, not just performance. Ford states that maximum horsepower, torque, payload and towing may not be achievable at the same time, so verify your VIN’s ratings before hitching anything.
π Check your own vehicle first: Specifications vary by build date, package and market, and two trucks with the same badge can be built differently. Before you buy anything based on this page, confirm against the door-jamb Safety Compliance Certification Label, the Tire and Loading Information placard, and the window sticker or VIN build sheet. If your vehicle disagrees with this page, your vehicle is right.
How much power does each 3.5L engine make?
The PowerBoost out-produces the 3.5L EcoBoost in every Ford document we checked, but Ford’s 2026 documents disagree on the exact numbers.
Horsepower and torque, 2021β2026

- 2021 launch: 3.5L EcoBoost 400 hp / 500 lb-ft; PowerBoost 430 hp / 570 lb-ft.
- 2026, Ford’s F-150 technical specifications (March 2026): the same 400/500 and 430/570.
- 2026, ford.com’s XLT model page: 382 hp / 500 lb-ft and 420 hp / 578 lb-ft.
Either way, the 2026 hybrid leads by 30β38 hp and 70β78 lb-ft.
How Ford rates hybrid output
Ford’s spec sheet says the hybrid figure is a combined engine-and-motor rating, calculated at peak battery power.
π What This Spec Means: The PowerBoost’s combined output depends on battery state. Read it as a peak rating, not a constant.
PowerBoost vs 3.5 EcoBoost towing and payload by setup

For 2026, the 3.5L EcoBoost out-tows the PowerBoost by 900β1,900 lb depending on drivetrain, and out-carries it by roughly 400 lb.
| Build (2026) | Max tow | Max payload | What It Includes | Applies To |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3.5L EcoBoost 4×2 | 13,300 lb | 2,440 lb | Tow: SuperCrew + 53T + Max Tow Axle | 2026 |
| 3.5L EcoBoost 4×4 | 13,500 lb | 2,175 lb | Same | 2026 |
| PowerBoost 4×2 | 12,400 lb | 2,045 lb | Same | 2026 |
| PowerBoost 4×4 | 11,600 lb | 1,740 lb | Same | 2026 |

4×2 vs 4×4 ratings
π« Fits But Shouldn’t: Buyers often assume 4×4 tows more. That holds for the 3.5L EcoBoost (13,500 vs 13,300 lb), but it reverses on the PowerBoost: 12,400 lb for 4×2 versus 11,600 lb for 4×4. A 4×4 hybrid ordered on the 4×2 figure has 800 lb less rated capacity than planned.
What changed from 2021 to 2026
At launch, Ford announced 14,000 lb for the 3.5L EcoBoost and 12,700 lb for the PowerBoost, so both 2026 ratings are lower. For 2022β2025, read that year’s towing guide rather than assuming either figure. Ford’s 2026 towing guide and our hybrid towing capacity breakdown cover each build. See also what the Tow/Haul Package and Max Tow Axle add.
β Do This: Ask the dealer for the window sticker and confirm three things: the engine, the 53T package, and the Max Tow Axle. Then ask for the GVWR and GCWR for that specific VIN, not the brochure maximum.
Which F-150 cabs and trims can you get each engine on?
Availability is where published sources disagree most, so check the order guide rather than a dealer page.
Cab and bed
Ford’s 2026 specifications publish both engines’ maximum tow ratings for the SuperCrew cab. SuperCrew comes with a 5.5-ft or 6.5-ft box.
Trims by model year
Ford says the 2026 PowerBoost reaches more trim levels than before. Ford Authority reports the STX was added for 2026, after XLT was the lowest hybrid trim for 2025. One dealer, citing ford.com in April 2026, lists only XLT, Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum. Our engine options by trim guide tracks this by year.
Fuel tank, fuel economy, and hybrid warranty compared
The hybrid’s efficiency gain is partly offset by a smaller tank, and its extra hardware carries longer coverage.
Tank and fuel
Ford’s 2026 specifications list a 30.6-gallon tank for the PowerBoost and 36.0 gallons for the 3.5L EcoBoost. Both take regular 87-octane fuel and 6.0 quarts of oil.
EPA ratings
The EPA rated the PowerBoost 4×4 at 24 mpg combined for 2021, 23 for 2022 and 2023, and 23 for 2024 (22 city / 24 highway). Ford’s 2021 towing guide cited an EPA-estimated range of about 700 miles. Compare your year’s EcoBoost row on fueleconomy.gov’s F-150 listings.
Warranty coverage
For 2026, hybrid-unique components carry 8 years/100,000 miles, versus 5 years/60,000 miles for the powertrain.
Which 3.5L suits how you’ll use the truck?
The choice is a trade between rated capability and hybrid extras, and the numbers above set its size.
Heavy or frequent towing
If your loaded trailer approaches the PowerBoost 4×4’s 11,600-lb rating, the 3.5L EcoBoost’s 13,500 lb and 435 lb of extra payload leave more margin on a comparable SuperCrew 4×4. Tongue weight counts against payload, so that payload gap matters as much as the tow gap.
Mixed driving and jobsite power
The PowerBoost suits buyers who value efficiency and onboard power. Ford’s 2021 technical specifications list 2.0, 2.4 and 7.2 kW Pro Power Onboard outputs, and the 7.2 kW unit has been offered on the hybrid.
Why dealer numbers disagree β and where to check yours
Dealer pages publish 11,200, 11,600 and 12,700 lb as the PowerBoost’s maximum tow rating.
Conflicting published figures
The 12,700 lb figure is Ford’s 2021 launch rating. The 11,600 lb figure is the 2026 4×4 SuperCrew rating with 53T and the Max Tow Axle. The 11,200 lb figure matches no row in Ford’s 2026 specifications, so treat it as unverified.
Reading your labels
- Door-jamb certification label: GVWR and the axle code.
- Tire and Loading Information placard: the occupant-plus-cargo limit for that truck.
- Window sticker: engine, 53T package, Pro Power output.
Our guide to payload versus tongue weight shows how a trailer eats into that placard figure.
β Do This: Ask the dealer to show you that the axle code on the certification label matches the Max Tow Axle that Ford’s towing guide requires for your build.
